Just a quick update regarding this as I managed to resolve this issue a while back.
Following the advice from The Laird and HP
I removed the glass and applied WD40 liberally. After engaging reverse several times I noticed it was very slowly starting to return to its normally position after moving out of neutral. More WD40 and more reversing and it was soon moving freely like it should do.
I remember when I bought the car the wing mirror knob position was centred so I wonder if the lack of use meant that it just seized up over the years. It’s been well over a year and still working fine.
