Wee update on this one, I'll start from the start.

Bought car, got message that key battery was low. Next morning wouldnt start, car battery flat.

Bought a pack of (generic, no name) batteries for the key fob and fitted one. Still didnt work. Tried another battery. Nothing.

Eventually bought a new key of ebay, used genuine advanced key, with the intention of fitting a blank blade and getting it programmed. For some reason I decided to swap the battery from the new key into the old one - phillips battery.

Car unlocked a couple of times as it should and locked with the fob. Then back to square one. Change key battery every tme car started.

On a whim I bought a pack of duracell batteries and tried on the key fob. Has worked every time since. Still doesnt lock with the button on the handle but locks with the fob and unlocks just by pulling on the handle.

Moral of the story... It appears the A8 is a battery snob. If you're having this issue and you're using cheapo batteries, try a name brand one in it.
