Really - I thought it was a EU requirement that the car can be serviced without "special" tools - hence there is a (often obscure) way of doing resetting the light to address that.....
http://resetservicelight.com/ for example, google is your friend! Or if you are in the trade, do you not have autodata or similar?
I have only used these methods for non-VAG cars as I have VCDS, but when I have worked on other cars never struggled to clear the light without plugging in - although for some it was a right faf
