Why do they sell it with 17.1 software and not the latest 18.2 what do you think? If you never connect it to internet and do not update it will probably be fine, if you update it will most likely 'brick' the cable as RossTech has a list of valid serial numbers they have sold which let you use the software and a blaclist of cloned numbers. There is nothing special about the chip, they are not RossTech own chips, at least not in in the older HEX-CAN cables, they use commercially available parts, maybe V2 or NET has own chips but I doubt as it would be very expensive to develop and manufacture own chips. It's all in the firmware, easy to copy but if software connects to internet and your serial number does not check out it will brick your cable, it can be recovered with a bit of messing about but will brick again next time.

If you want cloned version they are available for under £20 from aliexpress but be aware of potential problems and lack of support.
