From what I understand, the D2 actually has a very well designed HVAC unit, in so far as both the heater cores (x2) and Aircon Evaporator are removable from the plenum area, as is the main blower fan.
There is also procedures to access the flapper motors without removing too much (unlike my mates C class from the accountants era, which has 11 or 13 flapper motors and it's basically a dash out job to replace them).

Not quite to stop them melting!
However fading and shrinking/cracking is the main concern.
Not such a problem with modern cars, but it was rife down here 20-30 years ago.

I had a quick look at local manufacturers, none made for the D2 (no surprise there!).
No great loss IMHO. They're not very attractive - more attractive than a cracked dash I suppose! My Dad's missus has one on her Corolla and it does nothing for the interior ambience (actually, on second thoughts it is a Toyota...) - actually that's not a bad example, as it has a beige dash and a black dashmat, perhaps I should take a photo to show you how bad it looks!
