If you want spec, the 2.8 is not the place to be. The 3.7 will have loads more spec to start with.
The 4.2 should have lots more.
The S8 wont necessarily have more spec than a 4.2, but will have a purchase premium and higher fuel costs, along with a bit more cool.
Alloys can be changed easily after. Even the whole interior isn't that bad to change.
Getting the right car is important. A D2 with a broken gearbox is suddenly worth nothing. Really, nothing. The D2's with low mileage and / or a solid gearbox maintenance history are very thin on the ground. Getting a high miler and suddenly servicing it wont save the years of damage. Even the one I'm buying back im uber conscious I know that really, the gearbox is getting a bit of a lottery especially as the clocks have been changed at least once and the real mileage is a bit lost to history.
If you can afford it, the D3 loses some of the classic appeal, but in contrast to the D2 gains tech and there is no repetitive pattern of failure that causes their demise. They just keep going.
If you're hell bent on a D2 and colour is important, aim for any version you can get that's in good shape and worry about the alloys / interior / sport trim later if needs be.
Unfortunately you were really spoiled with your last one, and its going to make finding something similar pretty tricky.
If you want something insanely special, the pearl white S8 belonging to a8parts could likely be yours, but at a price
