I purchased a fan and resistor a couple of weeks ago and have just got around to replacing them.

The resistor input plug has melted and exposed the wiring - this would have been the source of the burning smell! I have attached some photos.

It looks like I'm going to have to find a replacement plug and replace some of the wiring loom before I can fit the replacements.

I'm still not sure how this could have happened overnight! I wouldn't have thought there would be a live 12V feed to the resistor while the car is switched off and parked, although I've heard some cars come with a "solar roof" option to keep the fans blowing slowly while it's parked which may be the cause (mine doesn't have this option).
