I just looked at my spare and I reckon it should come off pretty easily without any damage.
It appears that there are a couple of spring clips on the underside near the outer edges on the long side opposite the catch.
These clips retain a couple of pegs that stick down from the cover. They can be opened from below with a screwdriver easily enough, but not with the unit installed!

I just freed up one of those on my spare by levering carefully from outside and it popped back in again afterwards; didn't dare try both!
My guess is that with those freed that edge can be lifted a few mm and the whole thing slid off.

Edit: Just popped both of the rear clips and lifted about 15 degrees, but there's something retaining the front edge still. I suspect some metal has been bent through the two small slots you can find in the plastic lid under the front edge. Brute force would probably deal with that!

1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
