Default Won't run

After replacing the broken green powdery lug connecter that goes to the connector block on the underside of the drivers side front corner on the drive last night the 8 fires into life. Albeit a bit slow cranking.

Started up this morning fine, drove up the road to give it a run managed about ½ mile and started to get lumpy, missing a couple of cylinders or some thing. Then CAT light comes on and no power missing like mad now, dropped a couple of gears so I’m thinking limp home mode but came to a halt at side of road a stalled.

On restart engine misses, CAT light stays on the charge light comes on and then stalls. Then won’t start because battery is flat as when I turn the key all light dim on dash.

Called a friend who came out so we put the jump leads on, it starts CAT light stays on still missing, charge light flickers and then engine stalls.

So I suppose my questions are,

As the connector broke sometime on a journey can I have fried the alternator with out this connection making a circuit, there fore running on the battery now that’s dead too. I didn’t have the charge light come on until the engine just about stalled.

Can I be that unlucky that while the car has been sat doing nothing the CAT has collapsed and this is causing it not to run.

Or I suppose I could still have a bad earth some where.

ok, heres my thoughts.

Dont worry about the Cat. The cat light only comes on to warn you that unburnt fuel is entering the exhaust system, which could damage the cat. A broken cat is unlikely to cause you a great deal of problems until your MOT, other than running a little bit lumpy maybe.

It sounds like you have cylinders off, which can happen for a number of reasons. A common one is for the coil packs to fail. These small amplifiers are needed to boost the signal for the spark plugs to fire.

If one goes off, the engine ECU usually gets confused and starts shutting down other cylinders, ending up in a right wibbly wobbly misfiring mess.

The alternative is a fuel starvation problem, either through lack of fuel or fuel pump problem, but the fact that it restarted suggests to me this isnt the case.

Vagcom would tell you a heck of a lot right now as it would tell you which cylinders are off, and if this is consistent then the coil pack concept holds.

Also, there are two coilpacks, and swopping them over should move the problem, further clarifing the cause....

I'm sure right now that it seems the car is a heap of junk and you hate it, but really I'm sure it is something very very simple....

Oh, forgot this one - on the basic principles of electricity I'd guess that having an alternator not connected would be great for it, as there is no electrical load and thus no stress... Its not like it will build up electrons and fry itself, it will simply put no load on the engine.

Bad earth may explain the flat battery, or a poor battery itself - Cold weather is an absolute killer and a 'good' battery can be flat overnight when it gets chilly...

Thanks Ian. At least i have somewhere to start now. I'm still loving the car she's not done bad really, woudn't be quite so bad if it wasn't 1/2 a mile up the road and still on the drive. Don't fancy dragging her home by the ball hitch

I don't have Vag Com but can see why i should now.

Conan you still having your Carrier fixed in Scotland?

Does anyone lend or hire Vag Com to Dezzy?

You would be welcome to come over and use mine but seems your quite far away, I think we have a Vag Com register here so you could find someone local with one.

IT'S ALIVE!
I don't know what to say, lastnight in the dark went back to the 8 with a second battery from my Land Rover swapped them over so i could leave the park light on because i was worried the car was going to be wiped out.
Now matey from over the road gave me a lift back to the car as he was interested to have a look (he's a mechanic)

Everything was the same although with the new battery on it was winging over a bit quicker but wouldn't start, Andy (Matey) went into the fuse box then under the bonnet and said try that, car fired up although a bit lumpy then levelled out smooth CAT light stopped flashing and everthing is fine. Matey said he doesn't really know why it would do it only thing was a couple of fuses clicked as he went through them but all were in and none were blown. He's now a bottle of red better off.

Singh, thank you for the offer but like you say a bit too far (this time)

Conan, I'll get the kettle on.

Default Like nothing ever happened

After Conan plugging the old girl in yesterday and clearing one or two faults and none coming back after the test drive Went on a 200 mile trip and nothing, not a cough or splutter. So back to norm i hope, fingers crossed anyway.

I did find wet carpet in passenger floor so drain unblocking for me at the week end. The inside of ECU box was bone dry and it has it's seal so don't think it was down to that. (missing)

Hope your journey went well Conan after your S cought the missing bug from the drive? And a big, big thank you for plugging me in. I need one of them
