Default MOT Time

Happy Days, the new girl sailed through her MOT yesterday, with only one advisory. Hand brake needs adjusting slightly.
Always worrying when your new car comes up for its first MOT under your ownership.

Good news Always good to hear that. Adjsuting the handbrake is a bit fiddly though.

Hand brake needs adjusting slightly
There is no 'real' adjustment for handbrake, it is self adjusting. You can only adjust cable and you only need to do that if you replace or remove and refit cables. Most of quattro Audis of mid 90's-mid 2000's handbrake is not that good even when working properly and quite often it is not working properly. Mine has had advisory almost every year. The most common problem is that the shaft for handbrake get's rusty and stiff to turn so spring does not return it all the way back when you release handbrake and therefor auto adjustment does not work properly. I am now spraying ACF50 grease around the shaft every time I get near it to reduce corrosion. Only long term solution is to rebuild calipers and it is fiddly job to DIY.

I had my handbrake set upafter I refurbished/replaced the rear calipers which had sticky pistons and handbrake cable caliper arms problems. The entire procedure for setting up the handbrake - which includes accessing the handbrake cable adjuster - is at the Service Manual for the Brake System in the Tech Dump, Page 97 Sect 6.3. It requires a ratchet extension with UV joint to get the the adjuster nut. But if the handbrake arms on the calipers are corroded then it does require to get that sorted first.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info.
Car is booked into garage on 16th Dec for some work, so will have a looks at handbrake linkage first for corrosion. I will try and clean and lubricate as suggested.
To be honest, I do not usually use the handbrake when parked. I tend to rely on P on the gearbox. The wife tends to use handbrake though, so it does get some use.
Does anyone else just rely on Park, when parking up for a period
