Fog upgrade to HID's?
The other day one fog light blew so I need to replace this. I have a pair of HID Ballasts laying at home doing nothing. They have electrical shunt, are CANBUS suitable and my fogs are the projector type. Except for the legality issues of retro fitting HID's, would it cause any problems to the A8 if I installed them?

I think the HID legality issues relate mainly to headlights.
Not sure what the rules are about foglights, are the front ones even tested in the MOT?

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.). 2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation".  (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!  Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course.  (internal dimming mirror added later)1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

It would kind of kill the whole point of fog lights if you fit high power bulbs or HIDs to them.
I personally would not bother. They are fog lights, not driving lights.

Agree about the pointless comment, fog lights are worse the "bluer" they are due to scattering. That's why yellow ones are legal and were once commonplace.
Lights fitted to the car should work or they contravene the relevant regulations, so it needs fixing. Even if not tested at an MOT.

The ballasts are 35w and shouldn't give any more light than the standard 55w halogen. The lamps are 3000k, so should give a yellow colour. I'm not blasting light or going for a 6000k blueish tint for looks, just going to use these spare ballasts I have.

I read something about HIDs not producing the correct light (not sure if it was waves, colour or something) and generally being a bad choice for fog lights.
Same as LEDs. I did wonder if the more yellow HIDs or adding colour light tape over the fog would make them suitable but general consensus is that they are not good for fogs and ends up being like you're driving around with your full beams on. If you got spares and you think they will be ok. Do it and see what happens and report back when its foggy.

Have you considered LEDs instead of HID? No ballasts or sodding around required. Plug and play.
Front fogs aren't tested on MOT. Only rear is required by law.

I was thinking of those fan-assisted LEDs you can get but worried the fan/heat sink won't fit behind the cover. My fogs are H7 non-projector.
I have never used front foglights in 23 years of motoring apart from once in the peak district and they were not useful. I think of them just as coming home/going away lights on the A8 so the brighter the better.
