Default Timing belt or chain

Hi All

When I bought my 1998 D2 4.2 S8 it had no history,so can someone tell me if the S8 has a belt or chain and at what mileage should they be checked or changed.

Many thanks

All petrol-engined D2's, from the 2,8 V6 - 4,2 V8 are belt-driven. There is a chain linking both inlet and exhaust cams though, but the main drive from crank to cams is via belt.

IIRC it's around 100,000 miles. For some strange reason 105,000 sticks in my mind.

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I'd go with 5-6 years or 70k miles.

It's 120k km which works out around 75k miles. On some models it also says 120k km or 5 years whichever comes first, on others just 120k km without time period.

Mine had its second replacement at a long overdue 174K miles and 10.5 years old back in January, its first change by the previous owner was also slightly overdue. Mine is now well on the way to 181K miles, and it seems to be fine on the belt front despite 2 late changes.

My 02 A8 had a belt change at 61k miles, its now sitting at 129k! Would it be a wise move to get this and the water pump done? Parts alone are around £385, so its not going to be a cheap job inc. labour!

Yes I would definitely get it done now Rich, its normally 75k miles or 5 years whichever comes first so you are close on mileage and not sure on time?
its definitely worth getting the water pump and tensioners / rollers done at the same time - I had the serpentine belt done also. most of the V8s also need the thermostat changing at the same time as for the low cost its a no brainer as its hard to get to normally. not sure on that on the V6 though so check it out first. You are on the nail with parts costs at around £400 and quotes i originally had for my V8 recently were £640 from an indie and £880 from Audi but they did mine for a £100 inc vat in the end at Audi (subsidised by head office due to "issues" on another car) so I wasn't complaining!! The car is looking excellent by the way
