Default Let's get to the bottom of this MMI 2G Update/CP issue ...

Guys; it's 'well known' that the update of the MMI in A8s can cause '2095 Component Protection Active' DTCs in some of the media ECUs that it updates.

I saw CP myself when going from MMI 0890 to 5510/5570 when 5150 updated the Bose firmware from 360 to 460. My Amp is "4E0 035 223A H13" just in case that makes a difference.

I used to think this was an 'old issue' as most people are at 5570 aren't they?
But I've noticed an increasing number of people getting hold of 'old' cars that have never had any updates and asking questions about MMI updating.

Has anyone personally seen CP in updates they've done for anything other than the Bose DSP amp?

And alternatively, has anyone definitely updated a Bose DSP amp without getting CP when going to 5150/5570?

[As an aside, there's a strange characteristic of the Bose Amp's firmware. The 0460 version seemed to come along in the 5150 update package which dates from 2008 but the firmware date is actually 18/07/2005]!!

I've seen cp kick in during updates on b8 platform cars, but usually it clears itself during the update process. I think it detects a change during the firmware update but it runs so quickly once the other modules catch up it doesn't usually 'stick' so no need to have it removed. Same applies on cars with or without B&O which seem similarly afflicted as Bose on d3.

Maybe the d3, being cd based updates, takes that bit longer so cp can't clear itself as the modules restart?

My local Indy now has necessary access to clear cp - having to drive a customer car down to the main dealer for removal every time they changed a component was becoming a bind!

When I updated two years ago my Bose amp logged one CP fault. What's also interesting is that my fault is Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation and there is no loss of function so no need for it to be removed.

Code:
Address 47: Sound System Labels: 4E0-910-223.lbl
   Part No SW: 4E0 910 223 P HW: 4E0 035 223 A
   Component: DSP-Amp.-High H00 0460
   Serial number: qm
   Coding: 0000017
   Shop #: WSC 02313 785 00200
   VCID: 2A5B1BAF85ED256E23-807E

1 Fault Found:
02084 - Component Protection
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation
Should the fault have been Component Protection - Active then I would have had no choice for it to be removed.

That's a good point - the issue created with Bose/B&O does seem to relate to loss of basic settings/coding, so those less familiar with VCDS may not spot it

I updated from 21.2.0 0534 to 55.7.0 08xx without any CP in BOSE etc..
I did it with engine running and ran the CD's twice but don't think the second run did anything.

That sounds familiar.. maybe my CP went away after re-setting the coding.

Limoncello, see my comments elsewhere about the CD numbers; CD2 is BT only and won't touch the Bose. CD1 and CD3 both contain Bose firmware 0460, so both could have been the culprit.

Matty; I'm puzzled about your temporary CP. I got that on my Bose recently when the Motorola phone ECU packed up and my amp started gapping [going silent for about half a second every 5 mins or so] but it went away when I replaced the phone ECU [and cleared the DTCs with VCDS]! My original CP when I went to 5570 was permanent but that was 6 years ago and I didn't have VCDS at the time to check the DTCs.

But thanks everyone [so far]

Given that some D3 owners did and some didn't have to have CP removed, I'm wondering:

1) Did it depend on which Hxx level your Bose amp is? Mine is H13 from VCDS
2) Is the '0460' firmware on 5150 and 5570 different? That is, did some update from the 5150 CD and some update from the 5570 CD by bypassing 5150? I'm going to check that ...
UPDATE: I have checked that and all the code is identical on both 5150 and 5570 CDs. So it's not that!
I did discover that Audi left off the firmware update for the Bose for H10 level units on 5150. So if you have a H10 version of the Bose amp, 5150 won't update it.

Julian
