Default Temp sensor problem - Is it really engine out?

Hi All

I've a D3 2005 with 56k on the clock. The temperature warning light came on along with the rad fans - and a little while after, the engine management light (not worried about this, understand that it's just a secondary warning) Vag Com confirms its the engine temperature sensor with that annoying "intermittent" nature. Easy job, I thought. . Sadly not. Everything points to an engine drop to get to it.

So, I've two questions:
1. Has anyone got experience of this, and is it an engine drop to replace?
2. Would there be any way of hacking the system to remove that sensor output? There is another sensor in the system and it does a 'compare and contrast' job to establish if there is a real problem or if it's just the sensor... strikes me as overkill.

All suggestions welcome, it's a lot of cash for a sensor replacement.

Ah, crucial question. W12.

(Another question, Why didn't Clarkson just travel in the Cameraman's Range Rover - presumably just as quick since it was with him all the way but a whole lot more comfortable.....)

Yes, I spotted that thanks. However, the sensor is right at the back of he engine, right up against the ally bulkhead. The forever excellent Mark at MDM Technic was unable to get to it on a cursory investigation but I was wondering if anyone had actuall had to do this before and if there was a simpler solution to an engine drop.

I had to replace this sensor on my Phaeton W12 and it's tight but you can do it in situ.

I don't know if the A8 is the same but if the sensor is in the same place, it should be easily done without pulling the engine.
