Default Trackday tomorrow!!!!

I think we are about ready to go, have to be at Bedford Autodrome for 7:30am tomorrow ready for noise tests/briefing/sighting laps and then we will be let loose on the full Bedford GT circuit.

It'll be interesting to see how the car gets on, its got its KW variant 2 coilovers now but they may need a bit of adjustment to get the best out of them. The car is very light at the back end so at the moment you have to be ready to catch it under heavy braking especially if you trail brake into the corner.

We will have plenty of footage so expect to see us featuring on "the best of Crash" on men and motors in the near future

Well we survived, just about only a minor excursion onto the grass brough about by pushing too hard on cold tyres. There is soo much more to come from the car I'm sure. A bit of a Diary of events:

07:00 set off for the Track. The A8 and Boyd's TT were all set and ready to go, we also took my Mercedes V Class full of almost every concieveable tool that we might need along with the crash helmets, spare tyres and the like just in case.

07:30 Arrive at Bedford Autodrome and straight to noise testing for the static test, 78Db at 4500rpm even with the centre box replaced by an X pipe, as we were allowed up to 100Db we were well within the limits. It was part of the intention to keep it fairly quiet so that noise tests are not a concern but as we passed it with plenty of room to spare ate one of the strictest noise level circuits it allows us to consider making some more tweaks to the exhaust system.

07:45 Sign on followed by lovely Sausage and egg sandwich

08:30 Drivers briefing - The usual Dos and Donts but very fair and not much in the way of lecturing

08:50 Move to the pit lane and commence the sighting laps, slow sighting laps due to some numptys in some Subaru's being unable to keep up with the rest of the cars

09:00 Track open, we spent a few minutes sorting out the camera equipment out, it was open pitlane so no real rush maximum of 40 cars on track at any one point.

We had various times out on track during the morning session, but spent some time trying to understand the car and where we could improve. We were suffering with quite a bit of power understeer. The front end was struggling to hang on and whilst it was controllable its difficult to know what to do for the best. The brakes on the other hand were superb. The massive brake ducts were deffinately doing their job. After arund 5 laps the peddle would go a little bit softer but was still able to get the abs kicking in from around 120mph so no drama.

Myself and toby both took turns as drivers and passengers to help understand how we could improve. For me the biggest difference was I tend to have a smoother cornering technique than Toby. Whilst this would normally be beneficial it seemed to enhance the understeer problem as I would stuggle to get the car to the apex, whereas Toby with a sharper turn in was getting the car heading in the right direction before the tyres started struggling. It also helped to get the rear of the car dancing around which again helped tighten the line round the corner.

We went out for one session following Boyd around in the TT only for him to spin at around 120mph right infront of us, luckily I was already on the brakes and was able to slow as he spun across the grass and back onto the track, no problems a quick thumbs up and a visit to the Nughty boy's box for a quick word with the Marshall's. They were sound and just wanted to make sure he was not checking his speed on the quickest point of the track, but I think he was just a touch too late on the brakes.

12:30 Lunch which was spent discussing what to do to the car, suspension up or down, harder or softer, tyre pressures, etc. Boyd and Toby also managed to get the Race chrono feature on their phones working correctly as we had some difficulty setting the start/finish point as its so accurate you couldnt do it from the pit lane.

13:00 Work commences - we raised the suspension up a touch, wanted to make it softer too but between Audi and KW the make it impossible to alter without removing the shock completely. Toby was concerned it wasn't going to go back in again easily so we settle for the small increase in front rideheight.

13:30 Track reopens, it was about 13:45 by the time we had finished messing about and I took the car back out again, a marked improvement in handling and my first proper lap time of the day which was a 3minutes 08.

Toby and I took the car out again (me passenger this time) and agreed the handling had improved. A busy track led to some interesting racing* type situations and he managed to set a lap time of 3m 05sec

Boyd wasn't hanging around either and had managed a 3m 03sec!

It was nearing 4:30 and I went out again determind to put in a better showing, which I did 3m00sec annoyingly I set that time when I completely screwed up the corner before the main straight so a sub 3 minutes was deffinately achieveable. I took the car back in for Tobes to go out one last time only to find after 5 minutes that he wasnt going out again, a bit frustrating as I had wated a perfectly good lap for a cooling down one, then on going out again a warm up. Unfortunately I never got another flying lap in as the checkered flag was shown a few minutes before 5 so that we were back in the pits for the 5pm finish.

All in all a fantastic day, the day was run by Focused Events and I would thouroughly recommend them, they are big in the Motorcycle Track Day scene and have recently started car days, a baragin for what its was with lots of track time. Only 2 red flag situations both both were dealt with quickly (not sure on the first one but the second was a result of a Clio loosing a wheel)

5:00 Track closes and we set off back home only to overtake the numptys in the Subaru who had trailed their quote: "one of the fastest Subaru's in the country" for about the 10th time

Video footage and telemetry to come

* when I say racing I mean following other cars not real racing obviously for legal reasons
