Default cruise getting recalcitrant...

After leaving the 8 for a few days whilst working away i was soooooooooooo pleased to get back in after the diseasel hire car but disaster! the cruise wouldn't kick in, nada, nothing. Drove it home, left it over night and on the way back to work next morning, worked first time of asking!? But a few miles further on i tried it again and it was dead again, no response to the switch. The switch shouldn't be icky as i use cruise quite often and its never missed a beat up to now. Its a PF D2, the vac pipes look like they are where they should be, sooooo what are the next bits to peek at? Not had time for a proper nosey and just trying to short cut the checks

the switches are a not unknown to fail i beleive.

The switch in my A4 used to do simular things after it was left for a while (i assume dirty contacts), infact it didnt work at all when i bought it (the only broken thing on the car) but it was the first car i had with cruise, so i kept on trying it incase i was doing it wrong and one day, it worked! the slideing switch was completely dead, but the set/reset/decrese speed switch worked fine.

The stalks in that (2000 FL 2.8 B5 A4 quatty) are identical to my 2002 FL S8.

I beleive stalks are not too expensive, iirc i saw euro car parts did the FL stalks (probably a factor) for about £50 with a warranty.

Really silly question, but it hasn't been accidentally switched off on the stalk has it? If you push the slidy switch all the way in it turns cruise off.

no, its definately "on" on the switch, clicked it on and off a bit to make sure the contacts weren't playing silly so'n'so's. I'll have a good nosey at the pipe work if this rain ever goes and after that it'll be switch time i suppose. Must know its getting close to MOT time, my cars always throw a wobbler just before its MOT time.......

At least cruise isn't part of the MOT

Have you checked fuses? Not sure if it has it's own fuse in the D2.
