Default S8 - poor change quality when cold

Hi Guys

a quick question re my 2008 S8.

I've just come from a D2 S8 and a D4 A8, both of which had better gearchange quality than the D3 S8.

The torqueconverter or gear engagement is pretty harsh when cold, and setting off in first from stationary is an exercise in trial and error until it all warms up.

There are no codes, the box has only done 49K and is seamless otherwise.

Is this par for the course?

Thanks!

Default D3 s8 gearchange

Hi Duffy,

Mine is very smooth, even when cold. Mileage 144,000, last gearbox oil change at 120,000.

Regards

Thanks RR!

I might treat it to a service at Mackie's and see what happens.

Hi Duffy, I can only comment on my own S8 but my gearbox is really smooth too, at 125,000 miles and rising. My gearbox oil was changed by IT if I remember rightly, maybe 5000 miles ago.

Spent some time analysing this today, the box is slow when you are going into first after reverse has been used and its still switching over the cogs!

The D4 box is much quicker at changing and it's all down to my expectations, give the box time and its just fine.

The change between R and D on my D3 is almost instant even first thing on a cold morning. Perhaps the fluid is low, as it warms up it expands which could explain why it improves once warm.

Hello richardracer, i'm EISENMANN from Spain, i just register a few days ago. Today i go to my ZF dealer, that is an old friend of mine and we take a look in my S8 D3 to do a transmission service. My car is just 127.000 Kms ( 73.000 Milles ). To get out the pan is necesary to get out the exhaust lines, the heat excharger, one coolant rubber line, and a few mechanical pieces. A lot of work hours!!!!! Olso, he says me that in this S8 D3 is not posible to do a complete machine Exchange. Personally a complete Exchange with the machine is not for me. I prefer drain and refill with new filter.

He say me to drain and refill with ZF lifeguard 6 and do not do anithing more when the car goes to 90.000 Milles ( 150.000 Kms ) . Not open the pan and do not put a new filter because it has a lot of work.

My question is, haw do you do the transmission service in your S8 ?.

Thank you and excuse my bad english!!!!!!.

Regards

EISENMANN

Hello Eisenmann (something like "Iron Man" in German),
Welcome to the forum, and your English is much better than mine.
I cannot offer any help in this area, oil is not my forte, my tame fitter does all that for me. I prefer to sit and drive the superb car in the sunshine.

Default S8 oil change

Hi Eisenmann,

I had the oil change done by my Audi dealer at the same time as engine out for power steering pump failure. Not sure how they did it, suspect suck out or disconnect hose?

Cheers

Richard

Hello richardracer, understand. With the engine out is very easy to do it. In normal conditions to get out the pan it has a lot of work. A lot of hours to get out all the mechanical things put down the pan. It is not viable.

Any one of yours has do it geting out the pan in a S8 ?. The idea of drain and refill without touching the pan what is your opinión ?

Regards

EISENMANN
