Default New gearbox?

Can we not approach Audi or tps as a club to work out a deal to keep these classics on the road? ( that's if they are interested some manufactures aren't).
I don't fancy converting mine to a manual I like it as a auto! Whould the D3 box fit? Which I believe is a 6 speed auto? If its more reliable?
Just a thought cheers Dave

The D3 tip will physically bolt up to the D2 S8 motor, and you can get away with custom trans mounts, but that's where the differences will become apparent.

The ZF6HP26 has different dimensions to the D2's ZF5HP19/24. So your axles and driveshaft won't fit. The TCU for the D3 is also very different to that of the D2, and won't communicate with your ECU.

My advice? If your trans is fine, just do what you can to keep her going - fluid and filter service. If it's gone bust, then a rebuild or replacement with a factory rebuilt exchange is your only option.

Good luck!

Hi Hollywood thanks for your advice I expected the propshaft and don't see that as a big problem I've had them made before for around £100
Drive shafts are a little more expensive I think I've paid less than £400 last time for custom Half shafts made in USA and delivered in 10 days
The TCU unit and ECU would be tricky, but maybe not impossible I have a engine management specialist friend who may be able to help. I've not actually asked him!
CanBus could be the problem!!!!
And I've not looked into the final drive ratio yet!
No I've not thought of everything I'm just trying to see if its alternative solution
Dave

Custom axles can be built in the UK.

But already, I can see this costing way more than an 01E 6-speed manual conversion.
