Just got back from the garage. They are waiting to put VAGCOM on it. We discussed whether the cats need time to reach max efficieny. They thought that the 20 miles from the installers to home were sufficient and said that they would normally take the car to the MoT bay wamed up. Perhaps in this case it wasnt sufficiently hot so maybe it does need a thrashing before it goes in. (perhaps a Basil Fawlty thrashing would be best ).
And when it was tested yesterday, the MoT guys didnt actually print out a report - just a qucik test to see if met the criteria so I have no detailed values to go on.
So, I just have to wait

Sounds very frustrating David, but hopefully you're nearly over the finish line now. You're about 2 weeks ahead of me, and the only known fault on mine is an intermittent ABS warning light, so hopefully that won't be present on testing day!

AFAIK the post cat's lamba has nothing to do with fuelling, just emissions to let you know when the cats are failing.

Fitting an extended boss so the lambda probes are just out of the gas flow sometimes fixes the CEL light but if the cats ain't doing their job then the emissions test will always be a fail.

It was the SAI system not functioning properly. The connector to SA inlet valve N112 was not fully home (probably my mistake when I took the manifold off in Aug(?) to refurbish the manifold cover ) It showed up on their scan. I thought I had seen it when I scanned but it wasnt in the log I had told them that I thought it might be the issue but couldnt understand why it had not been logged.
Still, alls well that ends well and they charged me just 1/2hr labour (£21.50) for the handbrake adjustment and the diagnostic time so very pleased.
1 advisory: Oil leak! (theres a smear around the sump but I am not losing any noticeable amount).

Thanks for that Brian, we'll have to arrange a time/date ... although Mrs D seems to think that after the last few months I havent got any money left for a beer.

Great news It probably would have been ok after a good thrash then, since the SAI wasn't lighting the cats off as quickly as it normally should.

Exactly, the SSP for the V8-5V engine states that the SAI system is active at coolant temps between 0 - 55C and that the system is switched off after a defined mass of air has been drawn in (info from the MAF) and that this occurs after 60-90 secs.
Anyway the cats needed to be replaced as they were rotten. So, all in all, in the last two months I have had new front discs/pads, refurbbed calipers, new F125, lower control arms, track rod ends, 4-wheel alignment, MoT and handbrake now working properly. Total spent around £1880!
