Sean, as you have both a D2 and D3, do you think there's any possibility of a similar upgrade on the D2?

My initial response would be afraid not. The problem I found with the D2 heated washer jets is that you can't remove them from the plastic panel they are attached to, and that is because the wiring for the heating elements appears to be hardwired.

If you look at the first photo I posted with them sitting in my hand, to the left of the water pipe attachment there is a connector. That's the electrical connector, and so allows a faulty one to be replaced. Next to it is a 'blue blob'. If you have a look at the washers on the D2, you will see a similar blob (green I think), which has two wires going into it. That's what leads me to think they are hard wired, and can't be changed as such.

I suppose if you really wanted to fit them, you could use the existing wiring from the D2, cutting them off where they enter the green blob. A bit of soldering and the right pins, and you could plug it into the D3 washer. Getting it to sit properly would probably be the hardest part. The D2 ones are attached to a piece of plastic trim at the bottom of the windscreen, the D3 ones are attached to the underside of the bonnet. There is also that significant difference in size, with the D2 being roughly the same size as my thumb.

Hmmm, I'm not convinced about that, will need to investigate again when the weather is warmer.

I have a spare scuttle panel in the garage that I bought from A8parts to assist with repairing a broken central mounting, see: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=13287
I had the panel totally off the car and took it all apart, though in the end I "repaired" rather than replaced it.

As noted in that thread, having examined both trims together I had been considering "transplanting" all the washer jet components. I certainly remember removing the jets and it wasn't at all difficult. The piping and wiring was IIRC held on with cable ties and small metal clips.

I remember replacing the old dual-jet washers on my "late" Focus with fan jets many years ago and they were a significant improvement, so I'm motivated.

They are indeed, and try dropping one of those small metal clips on a gravel driveway. Maybe I just wasn't as motivated as you Andrew to do the work, as I was only trying to sort out a blockage.

Yes, I was trying to sort out a poor seal at the base of the windscreen which allowed crud to flow straight into the scuttle and block the drains.

I had to replumb the washers anyway as whoever had "bodged" the scuttle trim had also damaged/cut/shortened the piping to them with some very non-standard plumbing.

I might acquire one of those fan jet units to experiment with if they're not too expensive, what sort of price are they?

I paid the grand sum of £7.02 from Aliexpress, although the same set have now sky-rocketed to £7.09

From what someone said earlier in the thread, you don't need the spacers for the VW jets. It is one of the simplest and most effective upgrades you could possibly do, that I can think of.

In a side by side comparison to the ones I took off, they look 100% authentic. In terms of build quality, the moving parts (the nozzle) are snug and move smoothly. The plastics used in the construction seem as firm as the originals, have the same finish and no sharp edges. Dimensions wise, everything was perfect. The connectors made a satisfying click and likewise when fitting to the bonnet, there was a satisfying click from the fasteners.

Probably the biggest issue with buying copied stuff from the likes of China is how good a copy it is, and one of their biggest failings is in quality and accuracy. In this instance, the quality is excellent as is the accuracy. Will have to wait on another cold spell to see if the electrics are as good.

Will they last as long as the OEM ones? I don't know, but for £7 it's a chance I'm willing to take. I still have the original ones as spares, so I won't be stuck.
