Thanks Sean: walking distance for me, and easier to navigate than Asda's online version

Thank you lol, but I can’t take all the credit it was suggested on a post over on Pistonheads and I thought it worth a punt.

In all the years of working on cars it’s nice to find a product which does what it says..... just hope it doesn’t go the way Nitromors did lol

Sigh... I just can't catch a break with this one Everyone who has touched this car has ruined it, including the owner.

This was done by Service4Service in Surrey when they removed, bodged, and refitted the gearbox for a mere £3000. They are also the ones who filled it with gear oil. From the shape of the crack, they didn't remove one of the bellhousing bolts, and let the weight of the gearbox hang off that one bolt. They filled the crack from the outside with grey silicone to hide their crimes which means its likely too contaminated to weld.

If it weren't purple, I would scrap the car at this point and move on.

But it is purple

Jeez, MJ, its just not playing the game is it?

What I don't get about this car from what you say is the amount spent on it and the sheer amount of poor workmanship which seems to have been accepted by the owner(s). Even taking a moderate interest in what your mechanic is doing especially for the large amounts of money involved in this case, would go someway to ensuring that they do a reasonable job.

Most owners don't though David, and (realistically...) probably wouldn't be in a position to meaningfully challenge the "expert" who's working on their car - I certainly couldn't, and I'm pretty sure I'm not in a minority. Which is why checking reputation and references are so important.

It’s just one thing after another

This combined with the cracked blocked would scare most people off continuing.

How does one rectify this? Can the housing be replaced on these boxes?

Bolt it to a block, slitting disc through the crack to remove all contaminated metal, weld to stabilise the now larger crack. Remove from block, clean both sides and weld again as required
