Propshaft CV joints

I noticed while I had the transmission out that the front CV joint on the propshaft was a little dry.

It didn't feel bad so I've re-greased it but I'd like to be able to change it at some point just to be sure.

Having looked on ETOS and ETKA, I can't see the CVs being listed separately from the propshaft.

Are they just stock VW driveshaft CV joints or is it a 'you gotta buy a new propshaft mate' scenario?

Give tps a call...they will let you know if it can be bought seperately.

If it is a one peice item, then you might want to give J&R CV joints a call. It is a company based in south birmingham and they make aftermarket cv joints. The chap produces them at a reasonable price too and they are good quality...very well made.

TPS were quoting me exchange cv joints for my s4 at about 250 a side, whereas I sourced aftermarket from him for 30 pound.

I have the same parts programs that TPS use and it doesn't show the CV joints separately so I'm presuming that you can't replace them separately as far as Audi are concerned.

I just wondered if anyone had one sitting around that they can look at and see if it's removable with any part numbers on etc?

The CV joint will come off the driveshaft, they are held in place with an internal circlip. The difficult part is separating them and the last one I tried to remove was from my Range Rover which required a new boot and would not budge, so one of the flexible rubber boots was fitted.




This is from Range Rover but a similar set-up to most modern vehicles and most likely the same as the D2
Clips number 4 in the picture are what hold the shaft and joint together and can be a right pain in the butt to break apart

Hmmm...

I'm not sure that we're on the same page.

I'm referring to the Propshaft... that runs between the gearbox and rear diff.

Not a driveshaft that runs from the gearbox to a hub where the wheel is bolted on.

For the same of clarity...

Sorry I thought it was drive shafts, it was the words 'CV joints' that threw me as CV joints (constant velocity joints) are fitted to driveshafts


In that case if there are circlips in the yoke they can be changed, if there are no circlips then there are specialist companies who will rebuild the propshaft with new 'universal joints' and rebalance the propshaft


You can see in the next image where the circlip is fitted to the yoke.

Have you seen an Audi propshaft?

They run CV joints... just like driveshafts.

Not fully understanding the difference between the use of CV or Universal Joints I came across this on wikipedia:

Constant-velocity joints (aka homokinetic or CV joints) allow a drive shaft to transmit power through a variable angle, at constant rotational speed, without an appreciable increase in friction or play. They are mainly used in front wheel drive and all wheel drive cars. Rear wheel drive cars with independent rear suspension typically use CV joints at the ends of the rear axle halfshafts, and increasingly use them on the propshafts. Audi Quattros use them for all four half-axles and on the front-to-rear driveshaft (propeller shaft) as well, for a total of ten CV joints.
