Default Visit to Mackies

On Saturday, Brian and I 'gatecrashed' a Jaguar meet that involved a tour of Mackies , the famed ZF gearbox people.

Amongst loads of interesting equipment, demos and talks, we came across the legendary sucky, squirty, pumpy thingy that is used for flushing the gearbox on a service.

I learned a few things about this that I didn't know before:

1. It heats the transmission fluid to over 100C whilst it flushes it through
2. It's particularly important to get the cooler flushed through as this is where many of the fine particles can collect
3. The machine has its own very fine filter (much finer than the gearbox filter) and they can diagnose many faults just from the tiny particles that collect in this filter (e.g. brass particles suggest probable bearing wear)

Photos from the tour can be found here: http://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk...-111085/page6/
Many thanks to Jim from the Jag Forum for organising this and asking us along.

And one last point - John Mackie was kind enough to promise a voucher for a free gearbox service for a prize at the June Meet!

Was gutted to miss this! It seemed like a good day was had by all. Now I dont know whether to get my gearbox flushed and filled before the meet just in case I win the voucher!

There'll be a queue of people (starting with me) to buy the voucher from whoever wins it if they don't/can't use it.

We had a discussion around frequency of the gearbox oil change and the conclusion was around 40-60K miles. So that means mine will need doing every 2-3 years. frankly, I think that's money well spent to take care of your gearbox.

Default Gearbox service frequency

John suggested the same to me, in terms of frequency, but it depends on the car's annual mileage - your mileage is probably above average amongst the '8 owners on here Jim, so I think it's probably best to say 40,000 miles, or every two years, whichever comes first.

I'd certainly not leave mine for more than 2 years, given the peace of mind that spending the £155 at Mackies brings.

Yes,mine is around 18K miles per year, mostly dual carriageway and motorway runs for commuting (off peak!)
