The link above provides all that info - it does warn that poorly copied discs can cause the laser to burn out quicker. I can back mine up ok but can't change the book type to DVD-rom (mines an optiarc)

Not strictly true.

I have tried many times and failed with correct hardware/software/discs an settings. MMI discs on the other hand are no problem at all.
