I'm borrowing this thread as the tittle is good enough.
I was just wondering about how many times have you replaced the front wheel bearing on your D3? I have had the car for about 5,5 years, and from the sound of it, its time to replace the left front again. This will be the 5th in my ownership...

Genuine Audi bearings or OE-quality aftermarket (SKF / FAG) last well over 100K miles in my experience.
If you're going through one a year that suggests they either aren't being fitted correctly, or you're using very low quality parts. |

It's difficult not do the fitting correctly as it's not many ways to do it really. Last time I made sure it was SKF, and the one I ordered now is also SKF. The previous I'm not sure/don't remember the brand.

Definitely something going wrong though for an SKF part to only last a year.
Is the mounting surface in the upright still perfectly flat and clean? Dirt under the bearing or a warped upright would twist the bearing and damage it. I always file the surface lightly to check for high spots before refitting the bearing. Is the hub itself still round and in good condition? Again, burrs or damage here could distort the inner bearing race. It would be prudent to replace the hub with a genuine new unit at this point - I certainly would if I was dealing with a car with this repetitive problem. Are you torquing the four M12 bolts evenly and to spec? Ideally treat them like cylinder head bolts - tighten evenly and diagonally before torquing up, again so as not to distort the bearing housing. Are you torquing the hub nut before you put the weight back on it? Spec for most big Audis is 200Nm plus 180 degrees with the final 90 degrees of that being done with the weight on the wheel. If you don't torque it at least the first stage before putting the weight on it, the bearing races can be damaged. That sort of torque is very difficult to achieve - for me its when my 1m breaker bar is bending about 15 degrees! |

I've always been careful to clean out the upright and file down the mounting surface so the new housing will fit well. Never torqued the M12, as I don't know the value and I'm not even sure I will be able to fit my torque wrench in there, but I've always been careful to tighten several times diagonally to pull the new housing evenly into the upright. Will also try to torque the hub bolt the way you describe more carefully. Both the hub and the upright looks fine and undamaged to me on both sides of the car.
Thanks for the info MikkiJayne!

Just checked for the D3 - its 80Nm + 90 degrees for the M12s and 200Nm in the air then 180 degrees on the ground for the hub bolt. Grease the sides of the bearing housing before it goes in to the upright.
Sounds like you're doing it pretty carefully already so I'd be inclined to examine or replace the hub itself this time. |
