Hmm.... I also have a 2.8 FWD, though I quite like the V6, I’m less keen on the auto box.....
Had idly wondered whether the the 2.5 straight 5 (AEL) with a 6 speed would go in as they are just as robust, capable of big power and a bit more refined the 1.9, which is “gruff” at best. Nick

5 cylinder petrol D2s have been made (AAN sort of things) so the AEL ought to work as well, although it would need some changes to the front panel and maybe also the firewall to clear the injection pump.
The 1.9 PD is considerably less tractory than the VE-pump 4 cylinder engine. Not sure how it compares to the AEL though as its been a long time since I've seen one.
