i think its big bonus the gearbox has been done, this job is certainly not going to be cheap, if all the paper work is in order then good luck to the seller with getting a price, as long as the seller is up front about everything and is not hiding anything maybe it will help drive the price up on non cat d examples.

Simply stating that the "gearbox has been done" just isn't going to cut it on here where people know what's what - anyone who buys this without documented evidence proving what's been done is asking for trouble. I wouldn't pay more than 2.5k for this without more detail on this.

Which means its due again soon. As you have found, you're marketing to a tough audience on here. Most already have a car, don't need another car, and know *exactly* what to look out for. Options wise from your list, the extras this car seems to have: Sunroof upgraded to solar TV Tuner (Presumably inop due to digital switchover) Bose Xenon headlights upgraded to Xenon plus Everything else was standard kit on that year, including autodimming mirrors all round. There was never a massage seat option available on a D2. It is low mileage, and looks tidy enough, but Cat D + Ally car = bad news. Ally is specialist material to work on, and if not done 100% perfect, it will corrode and go bad. 30% drop in price is a good indicator of where to be on a Cat D, So £3.5K does really seem to be the ball park. Although it didn't sell on ebay at that, so, perhaps still overpriced.... Nobody here is trying to buy your car, knock you down and rip you off - Just offering genuine advice from our observations of the market. Consider that the number of people actively shopping for a D2 is minimal. The number of those looking for the expense of an S8, less still. Of those, the ones that are going to settle for an older, non final-edition or at least 20" wheels etc, fewer still. And of those, the ones that are going to pay top dollar regardless of the Cat D. Well, Nil probably..... Great maintenance records will help sell the car for its worth. It won't increase the value. Poor or missing maintenance will decrease the value. If you want top dollar for it, advertise far and wide and be patient. If you want a quick sale, drop the price

Insurance write off wipes a lot of value off car, it might be 20-30% on something like Golf but when you are looking at A8 it's more like 50%. And I do know what I am talking about as I have had several write off cars including my S8. If you buy one you intend to run it in the ground as it's very hard to sell. I bought mine for £2.5K in 2008 after it has been write off in 2007 and I bought it with the idea that I will be never able to sell it for more than scrap value. The £1400 you put in to it you should consider as running costs and you should not ever expect to get them back, it's like saying I used £3k in petrol so my car is now worth£3k more. I think others have been generous with valuation, in my mind if it did not have gearbox replaced it would be £1500-2000 car, with a gearbox replacement £2500-3000.

As said above, the money spent has to be considered running costs or maintenance.
The gearbox is a bonus and will definitely help resale but to recoup all costs is asking a bit much on an insurance write off, in my opinion of course. Good luck with the sale, you could try putting it on ebay as a classified ad with offers, see what interest it brings |
