Yep, I'm old enough! So I thought I'd post a few examples of much more humble cars, all of which I have owned at some point, that are now collectors items:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1963-MORRI...item41709eec6e

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/immaculate...item19d875dfca

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Austin-A35...item43b7bac431

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Austin-A-4...item1c2fbbf251

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1979-AUSTI...item337fea98d3

And, IMHO, I think the '8 will become a classic but, and I'll probably get slated for this, this is when the real final editions will come into their own.

I think anything will become a classic if you leave it long enough, 35 years ago who would have thought my Land8 would be a classic? and to that point that Allagro Imagine owning a Lancia Beta now that worked and you couldn't see through and in thier day they were seen as rubbish.

I'm not sure the Finals will become all that more desirable over a first gen D2 in another 20 years it'll just be those that are still with us worth money.
I'm don't think that the finals are worth anymore than the others now, just because they had no toys in??? Those that have been modified and had stuff thown in are not genuine anymore and therefore worth less than a non molested example. But then they are that much rarer as they were more limited. I don't know now i've opened my mouth, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Didn't know I had any!

It was worse - I had the gold coloured one with brown velour seats!

I bought it at an auction when my Spitfire dropped a big end on the M1 heading for Scotland. By the time I got to the hard shoulder it was a gonner!

I was 'courting' (do people do that any more?) my now wife at the time and we lived 400 miles apart, so I needed an instand, cheap and rust-free replacement. So concludes the case for the defence!

To be fair, it never let me down and, when I got a company car, I let my wife have it. She hated it! So I bought her one of these:

Then an Escort estate and now a BMW mini. No expense spared for SWMBO!

It's ok Jim, we can treat this as a counciling session, let it all out, get rid of all that BL from with in, all those memories.... brown velour, rust and hydroelastic

That said i'm supprised brown velour hasn't returned to us being "retro" and all, i thought thats was cool now, retro that is not velour.

Ian, you might be interested to know that I've been in touch with the guy who sold it to me, who now owns a C5 RS6 with loads of updates that runs well over 500BHP.
Apparently he has it looked after at Unit 20 and describes it as "Grizzed" which some here will understand more than me! He said of the S8:
Quote:
It was a special version and Audi told me when I bought it directly off their fleet for £48k, that it was their 1998 motor show car.
Now, I didn't know that but I guess you could check and verify it somehow. It should add to the "history" in no mean way.

Maybe you want one of these? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-BIRMI...item35c44b470c

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
