Is being VAT registered a sign of a successful business?? Or is it just an indicator that your turnover has exceeded an arbitary amount? That's turnover, not profit!!!

Either way, as a previous business owner, you should understand the difference between gross and net profits. The costs of running a business were neatly outlined by IT in an earlier post, even if he did omit the cost of posh coffee for customers and the gin palace showrooms

Default STEALers or DEALers

Sometimes they come good..... small scall but my other half has a Golf, which has a water ingress issue of late. Needed a small replacement hose, searching online cheapest I could find was £12 from eastern Europe or a little more from the UK, delivery in about a week. Called the local VW dealer, £5.66 inc vat and had two in stock! Also got a drink and a packet of biscuits while waiting

I remember a sign in a guitar shop that said "NO HAGGLING. Spend over £500 and you can have a free wine gum. Spend over £1000 and you can have the black one."

I spent £299 and still got a wine gum.

Tea and biscuit(s)? Now I feel like I should have held out.

I agree with IT's earlier comments - a business is here to make money. It costs me £200k/month to run a small forklift company here in Northern Ireland...and that is without a glitzy showroom.....but nice coffee and biscuits

Some machines we will make a nice profit on as the market allows us to do so. Some machines we make only a few ££ on because the market forces are against us.
We balance it up and hope to make a few £££ at the end of the year.

That's the thing, some businesses will register for VAT so they look more successful, some prefer not to (but then can't reclaim input VAT costs either) and others have turnover exceeding a specific amount!

I don't run a business but if I did would want to make maximum profit, for myself and also to reinvest. I'm sure there are plenty of risks running second hand car sales too with fraud, dodgy motors on PX etc.,
