It'd involve cutting holes in the body of the D2. The D3 holes are already there and the hinge mechanism is quite different if I remember rightly

or maybe some kind of adapter plate could be made to utilise the same holes and welded to the D3 bracket

I definitely don't want any holes in my car

Another idea. In D2 we have two standard struts: 4D0 827 551 B

Length : 403.5 mm
Outer Diameter 1 : 8 mm
Outer Diameter 2 : 19 mm
Eject Force : 310 N
Stroke : 161 mm

As you see, eject force is relatively small for strut of this size. The idea is to custom order struts with higher eject force so that the boot will open 'automatically'.

But there's a risk: If the struts are too powerful they will make the lid fly into the rear windscreen, damaging everything, including hinges. Also, strut power varies with temperature. They are stronger in summer and weaker in winter. But it maybe worth trying!

Here's a video of installing stronger struts. It is for Golf and there's no risk of hitting rear windscreen, but take a look:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RgZTIMsJLc

Now for D2 we can order custom made stainless steel (!) struts with variable force, which means they will fill it with gas to maximum, and we can then reduce eject force to desired level with a supplied valve. They can be re-gassed to maximum again if sent back to manufacturer. Take a look here:

http://www.strutsdirect.co.uk/compon...gas-struts.php

I want to order it just because it's stainless steel! Model SDSS-02 will maybe work for us in terms of geometry and it is capable of 75 - 650N eject force range, which is up to twice stronger than our struts.

Fully custom config is also orderable:

http://www.strutsdirect.co.uk/compon...gas-struts.php

I would try this approach before cutting any holes. And I guarantee it'll be dead quiet comparatively with motors stuff! ...If it'll work in principal of course...

The point of power boot is that it can open and close with a push of button.

Stronger struts might push it open but it might fail to open at all because of higher tension to the lock it might not disengage to allow opening.

And when it's open you will need extra force to close it.

Sure, I take these concerns on board. All these ideas should be tested. And yes, you still have to close it manually.

I'm not going to try the stronger struts, that does nothing to make this work as I want. I'm not opposed to cutting one or two small holes though. What I'd like to do is perhaps build a hybrid hinge using the D2 and the D3 hinge, and use the D3 motor. I think I could make a tidy little setup that way.

Vagcat hasn't worked for me either in the last two weeks, so I believe the site is down.
