Default Advice please 1996 4 speed oil and filter change

My 'new' Emerald green 1996 4 speed A8 4.2 ABZ arrived on Monday (I still have another 1996 undergoing restoration) This one owner car was given to me as a gift by one of my relatives who's giving up driving. It will replace my troublesome A6 2.7 that seems to enjoy eating it's DMF's and clutches and upsetting RAC men! The blasted things been a royal PITA, I'll be glad to see the back of it.

The A8 has 124K on it and could best be described as 'average' It's an identical twin to the one I have. But it seems to be leaking transmission oil from the lower sump gasket, not a huge quantity, but enough to raise concern. The transmission oil (and filter?) was changed once by Audi at 39,452 miles. My local garage, have suggested renewing the gasket and changing the gearbox filter and adding fresh oil.

So, where is the best place to get the filter and oil, Audi? Roughly how much would I need to buy?

I will await replies with interest. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Sorry for getting your hopes up with a reply...... but I'm also quite curious about this as mine needs doing. I did get as far as buying the oil (Dexron II IIRC). Bought 5L so far but from what I gather I'll probably need about 3 x that as it'll need to be repeated at least once as you can't get it all out in one go. Gasket and filter I've not got yet but from what I gather it'll be Audi, TPS or a ZF specialist.

How's the work on the other one going?

Nick

Anywhere apart from Audi I would recommend.....

Ideally a transmission specialist.

But, generally speaking, like the 6 speed boxes, the 4 speed ones seem to basically go forever without servicing.....

Thanks for the replies Gents, I wasn't expecting any TBH as there can't be too many owners of 1996 cars left on here.

Progress is pretty slow at the moment Nick. Illness put me out to grass for a while but I'm slowly amassing parts to attack the project anew. That wretched 2.7 A6 was the worst Audi I've ever owned. It was constantly playing up and spent more time on my ramp with me cursing it, than on the road. All of which added to the delays on the A8.

I've just bought a pallet full of parts from those well known and blooming brilliant folk at a company called 'Prestige Motor Services'. Anyone ever heard of 'em? As the 1996 cars have the 'universal' loom I've decided to add to the project cars spec a bit. I thnk I may have gone a little OTT But as I'm keeping the car for the rest of my driving career (barring accidents) who cares.

I'm none too sure if what's in the gearbox of my second A8 is Dextron II. The oil leak I have seems to be an opaque yellow/clear fluid. So can you refill with Dextron II? I was under the impression that it wasn't that simple. If you gather any more info Nick, please let me know.

Isn't Dextron mostly for American cars and cars using GM gearboxes? Anyway Audi part number you want is G052162A2 for 1l bottles ( you can have different capacities just change last character to 1 or 6 ect.) You can search for the Audi number and cross-reference.

There are about 7 litres in 4 speed box but you can only drain about 4 from the sump without removing torque converter or flushing it.

This is supposed to be half decent, cheap and compatible with G052162A2 but I have no personal experience so use it at your own risk. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/oel-guensti...sid=1101316816

Get it done properly at a ZF gearbox specialist with the right flushing equipment. It's the most likely big component to fail and it'll cost you £2K plus to sort it if it does. And anything else is just false economy.
Let us know where you are (and ideally I add car info and location to your profile) and we'll recommend a trusted specialist.

I did, the cheapest 8 in the world ever. but i still have it. That's probably not the best advert in the world ever "can't even give it away"
It hadn't been started for 18 months, put the battery out the sprinter in it and brummmm "it's alive!" Just dropping PAS fluid, quick.
