All but the cruddest of micra-mobiles have twin pane laminated windscreens, so yes, it does, but the pre facelift S8 had a special layer in there for some reason made of god knows what which basically prevents pretty much any radio signal getting into the cabin....

Fortunately, they changed the glass after 1999 so now phones / gps etc all work fine !

I think the problem coating is a metallic layer deposited onto the glass (Inside the sandwich). The idea being to reduce the greenhouse effect inside your car.
All your windows will have this and, sorry Ian, but I could barely get my Garmin to work inside my 2002 S8. Opening the roof/windows cured it though

Athermic glass if the name I beleive.

And sadly, not just the '8s had it. You see quite a few cars with that funny couloured windscreen. Manufacturers got wise to it and started to put an unprotected area around the mirror for GPS etc to be stuck on

Re-radiating GPS antenna. Put it in the boot, or under the wiper grille cover, then run the cable into the car and away you go.

Conan has one, though I think he's since put the gubbins into the position of the original GPS aerial as he uses TomTom.

Yup. Bought one of these and spliced it into the ariel on the boot. Works a charm and can run multiple GPS units of it.

I had heat reflecting windscreen on my 1997 S8 and GPS did not work unless I stuck it to the drivers door side window which have been replaced with normal window. Windscreen was in the bad shape witl lots of scratches, pits and chips, I was lucky enough to get a brand new Genuine Audi windscreen from facelift A8 for £40 on e-bay( best offer down from £50 buyitnow ).
