The end of vehicle clocking?
I don't know how true this is, but seems like a good idea.
New MOT certificates could banish clocking for good: http://uk.autoblog.com/2012/10/03/ne...king-for-good/

Does not stop clocking between MOTs . Say you do 20k a year you can just clock it back between MOPTs so it looks like you done 5k a year.

Am i missing something here? The Odometer reading has was on the old style MOT certs (VT20) anyway. It's never stopped clocking.

Slightly missing something, yes.
The main difference, behind the scenes, is that all MOT's are now registered on a database. Presumably this includes the mileage recording. So, while in future an MOT certificate can/might/will show the 3 latest annual mileage readings, more importantly the figures will be "available" for independent checking. Probably for a fee. I'm sure it won't be too long before "mileage correction" services will find a way to circumvent that.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later) 1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850! |

You can already get the mileage history for a car for no fee at all direct from the DVLA. You just put in either the V5C reference number, or the reference number from the current MOT. You then get all the passes / fails and mileages going back to the start of the electronic MOT. This new system will make it harder to hide, but won't stop it.
You can still clock cars between MOTs as long as you don't go stupid and go back beyond the previous one nobody will bat an eyelid. Nothing stopping you clocking a car at less than 3 years old when its worth the most before any MOT has taken place at all.

Great idea, employ 10,000 people to sort this lot out at our expense and it brings the unemployed statistics down
I agree, it isn't the answer and until we do away with all the speedo correction companies there will always be clocking.

So will the speedo / clocks come into test do you think? Because at present it doesn't.
So take my Land8 for instance it’s 45+ years old and developed a high pitched squeal from the back of the clocks couldn’t fix it with WD and the like so disconnected the cable, squeal fixed. It’s had the same mileage reading for the last 5 years. But I’ve not clocked it, not that the speedo makes any difference to something like that I suppose because I don’t know how many times it’s been round or how many miles the engine had done before it was shoehorned in.

But based on the recent reports of the calculation errors regarding the West Coast train line bids, where will they find so many civil servants that can count up to three?
