Reviving an old thread as my S8 is exhibiting a similar smell.

But, I’ve recently had a service, MOT and a gearbox service at Mackie’s. Shouldn't someone have noticed?

And just had all 4 calipers refurbished, so I assume it’s not the brakes binding. And all 4 discs are similar temperatures after a drive.

Gonna have a closer look once I can get outside without freezing my nuts off!

My immediate thought would be the rear output shaft seal, but since you stated that Mackies just did a service on the gearbox, I would think/hope they would have spotted it.

Another possibility might be oil seeping out from the rocker covers, towards the back. You could run your finger along the edge, although it gets tight towards the back, and on the drivers side, you would need to remove the air intake pipe to get access.

I did an oil service recently (just about within my skill set) and managed to drop a big splodge of oil around and under the beauty covers near the fill point on refilling. Wiped most away from above but didn't consider it had seeped underneath. Some spirited driving back from Worcester - M5,A419,M4,A34,M3,M27 - burned off the rest. Maybe just some excess burning off?

Mine has been doing this for a good while, intermittent smell rather than constant, pretty sure it is from cam cover leaks so will wait for when she gets to visit MJ for a proper job

Tried to add video but the upload failed, sorry
