I have my S8 insured on a "Modern Classic" policy with Classic Line Insurance:
https://www.classiclineinsurance.co....car-insurance/ Although not particularly cheap, they were by far the cheapest policy for someone who didn't use their D2 for everyday use. Of course this doesn't help those trying to insure a D4 but since D2's were mentioned above I thought I would just add my small amount of knowledge.

I'm with Admiral and have a D4 4.2tdi. Renewal quote last two years has been poor, both times I've phoned to cancel and both times they have improved on the best quote I've been able to find. This year quote went down from £600+ to £450. Best price I'd found was £515, which I told him at the outset and he said he'd beat it. No changes in Policy apart from another years no claims.....seems to be a game.

Result!
I did call Adrian flux.................quote with A8 owners club ref was £503! Returned to Admiral, after almost an hour on the phone (a bit of juggling no claims and removing a BMW 645) ... Got the D4 4.2TDI down to £273 (was £507 at renewal) with £250 comp and £250 vol excess. The D3 4.2 TDI down to £216 (was £266 at renewal), £250 comp and £100 vol excess. Wifey's A6 Allroad down from £240 to £192. Happy days!

I just got a quote from classiclineinsurance.co.uk on a limited millage, agreed valuation policy for my 2002 S8. They said they could class it as a "future classic". It came in at £400 for the year which is almost identical to my renewal quote with Admiral. The Admiral policy has no such millage restrictions.
The attractive quality of this policy for me was the agreed valuation part. That was until I read the documents they sent me. Any opinions on the statement bellow which is cut and paste from there proposal would be much appreciated. It looks to me like they'll pay market value only, just like any other standard policy. The only advantage I can see is that you get to agree that market value up front. It also appears (but I have to confirm this) that you need to purchase the insurance policy first and then go through the agreed valuation process for an extra £24. If they decline your valuation and go with there own, you will be stuck with the policy anyhow. There policy wording------ Please be realistic with your valuation. The figure that we agree will be the current market value of the vehicle and unfortunately cannot take into account the cost of restoration or any sentimental value. If you have recently purchased the vehicle, the purchase price will be the agreed value. Though it is human nature to over-value our possessions, we hope that you will provide a fair assessment of the value which will then be compared to current market publications to ensure accuracy and fairness. Is this not just like a normal policy, market value only without any consideration for how much you have invested in the vehicle? Frank

Sounds like BS to me.
Agreed value policies I've encountered before specifically do take restoration & modification value in to account and you agree the value up front which is what they will pay out. That wording looks like the usual dismal 'market value' figure which is usually a fraction of what a like for like replacement would cost. |

I have a policy with them for my D2 S8.
My quote was £309 which was less than any other insurer. The mileage limit I set was 3000 miles and I set my agreed value at £10,000 I recall that the fee for the valuation was waived and when I sent them the necessary valuation form with supporting evidence there wasn't any quibbling. None at all. It was accepted very quickly. The market value basis is only applicable until a valuation is agreed. After that you should be set to go. "Thank you for choosing to use Classicline ́s agreed valuation service, we acknowledge your payment of £0. Please complete and return the attached vehicle valuation form and please follow the instructions set out on the vehicle valuation form. Please note, until we have received a completed valuation form along with the required photographs and you have been sent your Agreed Value certificate, the vehicle will be covered on a market value basis only."

The receipt for yours would be sufficient evidence though based on their wording.
I doubt they would accept a similar value for mine despite the full restoration, brand new engine, custom interior etc. The insurance 'market value' of mine is not going to be anywhere near what it would cost to replace it. |
