Default Shocks

How do I know if I have sports or comfort shock absorbers

The rear ones are defo red not sure on the fronts
The previous owner replaced all four springs so thought might change shocks as getting quite rusty

Thanks

No point in reinventing the wheel, so check out the following post. It gives the relevant PR codes, colours and even part numbers:

Thanks

Thats just confused me even more - am I correct as in those those are just for springs?

I’ve just checked the invoices and the old man changed all for with eibach pro springs

So I was just wanting to check which shocks I should replace them with

Bilstein is way to expensive
The rear shocks of mine are red so assuming they are sports shocks?
Was looking at sachs but was not sure if they were the right ones for replacements for my car

Thanks in advance

Yep, that's just the springs.

In terms of using aftermarket ones, there are others on the forum who have changed theirs, and are more knowledgeable as to what to go for.

As for your rear shocks being red, I believe that's the colour they were originally painted, although MikkiJayne can clarify.

Red does denote sport shocks. Fronts should be the same. Unfortunately there aren't any aftermarket direct replacements for the sports ones, only the standard models which will lift a sport a few cm. If its just a matter of cosmetics (and they last well over 100K in terms of damping) get the originals media blasted, paint with red oxide primer and satin clearcoat and they usually come out looking original.

I've found Bilstein B6 are really only suitable for 20" wheels. They're too hard for 18s and just make the car bouncy and unpleasant, and very expensive.

Interesting and timely (for me) comment. Last night we were having a "pub discussion" about how often people needed new shock absorbers on older cars. I commented that it's never been an issue on A8/S8 that I was aware of and in fact it appeared that the shock absorbers generally outlived the car! Looks to be not far from the truth!

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Will just need to find someone who can do that in Leicester

Sorry for the questions
But noticed my steering does not return to the centre after turning
I know he replaced all the arms etc at the front
Do you think that could be the cause or do the a8s usually behave like this

That's not normal. Probably a bad wheel alignment if the front end has been apart - worth getting that sorted before it chews up the tyres.
