The key here is how you measure the speed. The speedo at the top end is complete tosh. The law dictates thata speedo should never, ever read slower than you are actually traveling, yet with tyre wear etc it is difficult to predict exactly what speed a car is going so manufacturers er on the side of caution and always make the speedo read faster than you are going. A car with 8mm of tread will be travelling faster than one with 4mm for example. Having said that, the engine ECU has a far more accurate idea of the speed you're doing, and as its thoughts arent governed by law, it is its decision when you have hit 155.

Here is a shot of a 2002 S8 hitting the redline in fourth, about to drop into fifth - Preface changes promptly by 7000rpm, facelift tends to drift over a extra hundred...

Speedo says 145, but really it'll be about 130.



And then here is the 'speed limiter' kicking in. As Ben says, the throttle just stops going any faster, its a very smooth numb feeling as the car just says enough is enough (Sorry its so fuzzy, the car was smooth, but I knocked the camera whilst taking the shot)



Speedo topped out at 177mph, but we know as it was the limiter, it was actually 155mph, so quite some difference....

Its worth noting that it takes quite a long time to get this speed up, at the top end every extra mph is a battle against extra wind resistance. Although there is a theoretical maximum in the 180's, I'm struggling to visualise it actually getting there......

No, it was actually a very quiet piece of de restricted German tarmac (most of it is restricted). Only two lanes, but very quiet as you can see. TMC took us this way due to congestion on the main routes, and boy were we grateful

These sort of speeds in heavy traffic aint funny, but it was quiet, dry, good visibility and legal so we pressed on....

Oh what fantastic luck. Probably straighter and longer than a track as well, which is good for top speed tests.

I know what you mean about those speeds, you are travelling so much faster than what you are used to, so have very little experiance and your reactions seem comparitivly slow.

Having driven fast in the distant past, for a while you do become more used to high speed, but there are very few places you can train yourself up at lesser 100+ speeds to get used to it to the extent you would actualy feel comftable at 155 !

Any idea of the MPG ??? Or did you metaphoricaly close your eyes to that one

I wonder how quickly a manual shift S8 will reach its limited maximum? Or what the maximum would be without the limiter?

Who's the man to see to delete the limiter?

I think 120 is a comfortable speed even in moderate traffic.

155 things seem an aweful lot faster. i remeber the car getting to 150 easy, then as the guy says, every 1mph extra seems like a battle.

the fuel gauge goes down faster than the speedo goes up.
