did some more investigating today and I have come to the conclusion that it must be the sensor thats dodgy.
This is the fault in VCDS Address 76: Park Assist Labels: 4E0-910-283.LBL Control Module Part Number: 4E0 910 283 HW: 4E0 919 283 A Component and/or Version: Parkhilfe 8-Kan H07 0030 Software Coding: 0101008 Work Shop Code: WSC 02313 785 00200 1 Fault Found: 01629 - Sensor for Parking-Aid; Front Left (G255) 004 - No Signal/Communication Freeze Frame: Fault Status: 01100100 Fault Priority: 3 Fault Frequency: 1 Reset counter: 50 Mileage: 209212 km Time Indication: 0 Date: 2014.02.22 Time: 11:20:34 Clearing the fault it goes away again, until you engage the sensors. The fault is always the same sensor. Now the error is a bit of a red herring because the car is seeing the sensor, and the measuring blocks confirm this. However the readings coming from are wrong, looking at measuring block 007, the reading for the sensor is half what it should be compared to all the rest of the sensors both front and rear. Code:

Something tells me that taking left wheelarch off will allow you to change this sensor without taking the bumper off. Or possibly taking off left fog light???

I can reach in from above, and get right to the back of the sensor so access is no problem. Getting the thing out is more the issue. I have no idea how its retained, or how I would get a screwdriver down there to release the connector.
Now, if the trim beneath the headlights came out easily it would be a doddle to change.

If you have enough room from the top, connector shouldn't be a problem, simple plug and actual sensor looks like needs just a twist and pulling out
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A6-A8...item27d30fc811 If not enough room, then access from the wheel arch might be your another option as mentioned before. Engine under tray out and access from the bottom???

I found a brand new genuine OEM sensor for way cheaper than the A8parts used one (Sorry guys).
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3210477522...84.m1423.l2649 Sometimes brand new parts are cheaper than used. Not really fussed if its not silver, as long as it works.

Link was just to show the connector type and the way it's possibly fitted (twist and pull, I think)

I now have the sensor from the link I posted, Genuine Audi part for much less than the dealer. its going in my bumper unpainted for now as I just want the sensors to work, in the future I'll sort out the paint. I just hope its the sensor and not a wiring break.

Hooray, my parking sensors are working again.
Bit of pain changing the sensor but got it done. There is a wiring loom that sits directly behind the sensor, so had to cut a tie wrap to move that out of the way. Once that was done I was able to locate the clips holding the old sensor in place and then pop the old sensor out. Removed foglight grill, and the foglight and got the sensor still connected to the loom to the foglight area, and disconnected the plug. Plugged in new sensor, and tested. Then pushed the new sensor back into the bumper and reassembled everything. Now have three silver and one black sensor in the bumper, but they are working....
