Or was it going to be an option on the Audi V8?

and Monday's update:

The PF crankcase ventilation hoses are a; knackered, and b; obsolete so I made a replacement from an FL hose instead I still need to make a joiner for this but it'll work nicely

Red ATF. Because of course I'm beginning to think its literally just me and Mackies who put the right oil in these things. Still, they seem to cope pretty well with the wrong stuff (remember the murple had manual gearbox oil in it) so I'll just replace this all with the right stuff. The sump has to come off anyway.

Moved the engine - this is the aftermath on the cardboard protecting the floor!

Engine waiting for parts, gearbox not started yet. MoT on Thursday

So this is the cause of the power steering leak The top of the servotronic solenoid has corroded to fluff and disintegrated. This will be replaced with the Jaguar / BMW version the same as I did with the Murple.

Some before pics of the wheel wells

Oh, and the PS fluid has dissolved the plastic coating on the osf brake line which has then rusted away. I'll just swap the whole line while the drivetrain is out.

It had a new wiper mechanism in 2006 which is nice. That would have been under warranty I think? Its in nice condition anyway.

Before and after of cleaning the engine bay

Some serious grot on the left hand side

The damn car dealer lacquer is making everything difficult with its nasty yellow staining everywhere. The brake lines are covered in it

The driver's side came up pretty well, but the passenger side is going to need another session tomorrow.

Perhaps thats where the tale of the D2 being used as a mule for the RS6 development came from? Not the 40V though, but the 32V.

The very early 32V in the V8 doesn't have these features, and I'm pretty sure the 3.7 32V doesn't either. I need to find some pics of an ABZ to see if that has them or not - perhaps its just the AHC? Either way it would be rude not to finish what whoever it was started One for the future...

No rush then. The people who do your MOTs must be in awe with how you present a car to be tested.

I have had a few comments about how my 20 year old candidates are usually cleaner than cars coming in for their first MoTs

No MoT on Thursday now though. I was making myself ill trying to rush to get this ready for AITP and its not worth that so I have slowed down. I'll take Big Red instead.

Mike came over yesterday, and having stood down from the mad panic we had a nice day of tinkering instead.

There are two types of seal on the cam ends. These larger ones are still available from Tradition:

The smaller ones are not available at all, so after a bit of fiddling I found that a 40x3 standard o-ring fits perfectly

I've had a few bits powdercoated in a nice flat silver as the nasty yellow lacquer had ruined the painted belt covers. With the seals sorted the belt rear covers could go back on

and then the new timing belt kit

I had the inlet manifold done to match as this was raw aluminium and pretty nasty

All the springs too. This one sits quite low at the rear, which seems to be a PF thing, so I've used a cunning combination of PF and FL bits on the front struts to get a free lowering which will hopefully get it to sit about flat.

If it turns out too low then I can swap stuff around at the front to lift that, and put some FL rear springs on to lift the back end. Plenty of options once its back together

I'm having a day off today and going to the seaside

Can I interest you in a pair of unused PF front shocks? They are officially for 2.8FWD so probably a bit softer but I don't think there is massive difference in weight so should be not much difference in shocks. Also have 2 sets of unused Apec front brake pads for PF.

"I had the inlet manifold done to match as this was raw aluminium and pretty nasty"

Credit where credit is due MJ, that is now a fine-looking inlet manifold, lovely stuff. Wish my one looked the same.

Cheers for all the interesting posts on this WITW thread.

Back on this after some time on other things. On to the steering rack and the servotronic solenoid

This is a Jag XJ solenoid with a Bosch Junior Timer connector instead of the silly disintegrating wire that Audi claim is to make it possible to remove the rack (which is bunk btw - this one works just fine)

I printed a polyurethane boot to cover it up, which is lined with waxoyl to stop any moisture getting in so this one won't corrode away like the last one did

Next I need to make a wiring harness - I may have shown this in the murple thread, but its here again for completeness. This is all that is left of the original:

Parts to make the Jag version work

Junior Timer terminals crimped on with red to red. Not sure if these solenoids are polarity sensitive but I'm keeping them the same anyway.

Assembled with the boot.

Terminals on the other end. The cable is 85cm by the way.

Red to red again

Completed adapter harness

Which fits like this This will probably outlast being allowed to burn dinosaur squeezings

Back on to cleaning the engine bay. The fan resistor pack is looking a bit sad with all the studs snapped off

Got in a grump with cleaning so moved on to the brakes. The fluid is a bit grim, as always. No one ever changes it

Old brake fluid vs new

There was a very good reason for changing the brake fluid before I then took the braking system apart, but I forget what it was The OSF hard line had been ruined by the PS fluid eating the plastic coating allowing it to rust away so this has to come out

Something has dissolved the rubber in the brake pipe clip - probably the copious amount of PS fluid which was coating everything

Old brake pipe off

Removed the clip and cleaned all the yellow nastiness off with thinners

Looking much nicer

OSF brake pipe refitted and a replacement clip in place.

I'll finish cleaning the bay tomorrow and then I can put the rack back in
