Heksi, who posted at the top of this very page, has a manual PF S8 There are a few of them about. I have a PF manual gearbox, but none of the rest of it. Unlike the FL, the PF ECU can't simply be flashed with a manual file. It would need an eprom burning using a copy of a donor, and may even require the old eprom unsoldering from the board.

I have enough manual parts to do six swaps, all of which are in-flight or in-storage projects. After those there will be no more, although I will make the clutch pedal assembly available if anyone else wants to try piecing a swap together.

Just out of curiosity, how would a swap on a 2,8 look compared to V8? could the parts be sourced from a6 2.8, superb 2.8 etc?

Even more difficult, with even more custom bits than the V8. The D2 uses tripod inner joints across the range, but the lesser models use CV joints so you'd either need an original D2 2.8 gearbox (which I do actually have) or custom front shafts.

You'd also need an extra-long propshaft which is one of the hardest things in the UK as we simply don't seem to have the skills any more to make that sort of stuff, which is trivial in the US. The muppets that made the shaft for the S8 swap I did tried 4 times to balance it and failed miserably, and unfortunately they seem to own 99% of the driveshaft shops which turn up in a google search. The propshaft is actually the main thing preventing me from making any more swaps, although 6-speed gearboxes are getting very rare now too. Its doable with the new generation of gearboxes as Wolfinsheep'sclothes showed, but thats then custom everything.

I should have a manual ECU file for ACH from when I was looking in to it. Chip is soldered on PCB and is write once chip. It needs to be unsoldered and then you can solder in socket which then accepts replacement chip. You can then use UV erasable chips in the socket.

So, dumb question here, is this the engine ECU or the gearbox?

Reason I ask is that my original (PF, 1998) S8 had been "tweaked" to supposedly remove the 155mph limit (pretty certain on that) and also change the gearbox behaviour to make it even more "sporty" - shift points I guess. Allegedly it also added some BHP but I'm not sure how....

It definitely involved swapping out a chip in one of the ECUs and "somewhere" I probably still have the original, if it's likely to be of any interest?

1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I will have to gig through some old files and emails. I had some chips and sockets bought as well when I was considering manual swap but abandoned idea as it turned out to be a lot more involved than 1st thought. So I should have some sockets as well. I did send the chips in post and emailed file to have them programmed but the got lost in post, not sure but I think I did not post all so shod still have some but that was at least 10 years back now, possibly even before house move so not sure if I can find them

Engine ECU. With the manual swap the gearbox ECU will go away

If you can find the file that would be fab, and may well change the direction of this project I can write the eproms

Ah, wasn't sure if it was still needed in some limited way to keep the engine ECU happy even though it won't be doing much.

That has been done in the past - keep the TCU and fudge the F125 to be in neutral so the engine still runs ok, but its a nasty hack. If I'm going to do it I'll be making it the way the factory did with a manual ECU that doesn't expect there to be a TCU at all
