Default ESP switch

So, with all the snow lying around, is it best to turn off the ESP or leave it on? Does switching it off have any influence on the ABS system too?

If you're sensible, with quattro it makes little difference to be honest (have played around with both on and off).

I Don't think the ESP alters the ABS. Just leave it on, and play.
This as great opportunity to discover what can do

ABS can't be turned, only a fault in the system (eg faulty sensor) or pulling the fuse to the ABS controller would stop it working...

ESP is probably worth leaving on as it will deal with situations where one wheel hits ice and the other 3 are still good to go.

Agree that when driving sensibly there will be little in it, but lets face it, we all like to nail it a little and see what happens in this weather, and with ESP on you should pull off quicker in a safer straight line....

Had half an hour to kill this evening so been for a test on an empty snow-covered carpark. As PsYcHe said, not much difference with ESP on or off if you squeeze the throttle gently, but deffinitely more sideways action when you stamp on the loud pedal:ROFL

Think i'll be leaving the ESP on while there's snow lying around then

ESP research day. Thorough testing in narrow lane that is currently one long sheet of ice with the odd dry patches.
ESP on, heavy right foot = Lots of interesting twitches, rev counter action, sudden huge bursts of acceleration.
ESP off, heavy right foot = very Very exciting, learned how long and 8 is and how narrow that lane, oppy lock comes kinda natural when the alternative is a trip into the scenery.
Conclusions
1/ No ESP is almost to much fun with all that power
2/ ESP on a low friction surface = very quickly reaching a high speed... on a low friction surface, where ABS is about as much use as a pork pie at a
Bar Mitzvah.
