Architex, I quite agree. And I'd rather hear someones' opinion however they care to express it, than do without it at all.
On the other hand. Ach! Maybe it's the times we live in.

So only 55 'D1's' still on the road? If you'd said '5' I'd have believed you!

The D2 is a great car though, as surely time will tell. I'm not selling mine.

From Wikipedia
The Audi V8 (Typ 4C) is a large luxury four-door, five-seat saloon (sedan), built by Audi AG at its Neckarsulm plant in Germany from October 1988 to November 1993,[1] as the company's range-topping flagship model. It was the first car from the Audi marque to use its namesake engine configuration - a V8 engine, and first Audi car to combine quattro system with an automatic transmission.[3]
Factory production commenced in October 1988, and ceased in November 1993,[1] although sales of completed vehicles continued in 1994.[4][5]
and one here, looks like it just needs a bit of TLC

If I had the room I'd buy that and restore it!

For me classic status is determined by a few simple factors.
1. Did it do something new, different and/or better than it's contemporaries?
2. Does it have a quality to it's design that could put parts of it into my home purely for aesthetic reasons?
3. Would owning one make me smile?

Using those criteria the 2cv, ds, Original quattro, Opel manta A, XJ series 1, Mini and the D2 A8 qualify.

All ally construction, great powertrains, characterful handling once you figure out how to stop it understeering (Feckin' odd tyre pressures help ) butch looks without being garish. It works for me, even my current one feels special every time I drive it. the only time it has been slagged off was by a 207 driver i work with so reinforced its goodness by his negativity. I did threaten to fold his car up and put it the boot if he carried on mind...

My own D2 is now going better than ever.

I popped her back onto the correct Avus rims, fixed a sticky intake timing valve thingy and washed her.

Came home from EDI this evening, and it was a very lovely view of the sun setting as we headed west on the M8, at a proper rate of knots.

The S8 was a -humming, I had 'System of a Down' beating my head in on that ab-fab Bose sound sys.

What was there to complain about?

Not much! I think even the mpg has improved.

(Edit. A tank got me 360 miles before fixing the stuck intake manifold actuator. What do other FL S8 owners get to a tank?)

Conservation.

Keeping an old (but a bit sweaty) car like a D2 on the road must be one of the greenest things a chap can do!

Ok, the sucker only does 19 mpg, but at least it prevents the manufacture of another car, to replace itself,as long as it keeps going.

That is clearly a truism.

So, your S8 may be silver, but truly- it's Green!

I'm not sure that the D2 has the potential to be a Classic, but the true test if it is becoming a classic is that 2nd hand prices will stop dropping and if not rise, hold stable.

We're not there yet, but will that happen soon?
