Default Air Suspension Relay - Preventative Swap

Understand from some D3 owners I've spoken with that swapping out the air suspension relay is good preventative maintenance (to avoid the compressor sticking on and burning out) so I'm keen to do it.

From a quick scour the compressor burning out on relay failure does come up - can someone help with which one to replace and how to do?

I've seen 373 and J408 both mentioned (and this thread: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5085)

Thanks in advance!

It's a 373 relay that is named J403 - a unique identifier so it can be found in the current flow etc... It is in the front left footwell, position 5. The relay itself is 12v40a with a resistor across the coil to absorb high voltage spikes created by the collapsed magnetic field on disconnection of the coil. Hope that helps.

I would be interested too, is the access to relays easy or is it a take half the dash out job?

Thanks Matty.

I found this thread on another forum (no lynching please!): https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-...-fuse-2835590/

Not sure I'll get round to this for a couple of weeks but I will take pictures and do a thread - this one's probably a candidate for a sticky.

Daft question for ordering - will any genuine Audi 373 relay work or is there a specific one for the air suspension? Do I just say J403? Reason I ask is because I see 373 relays are used for other things, e.g. gas discharge bulbs.

Thanks again

Yeah any 373 relay will work. 373 is the relay type, in this case it's a 'make & break relay normal open with coil suppression resistor rated at 12v 40amp'. They are used elsewhere, hence giving it the name J403 to identify it as the air compressor relay.

It does have a VW/Audi part number: 8D0951253A
