Picked it up this evening. £155.40 all in, which included £52.50 worth of oil (plus VAT). I was talking to the service manager about the gearboxes: he reckons that they're fine and not prone to failure - if you look after them. And to look after them, he recommends an annual oill and filter change!

Well, at £155, I might just consider that.

Sounds like a very good deal - mine's on practically the same miles as yours, and though there's no sign of any problems, at that price it sounds like a good value precautionary measure. I - and I'm sure others - would be really interested in a post-flush running report, once you've had a chance to assess it, if you have time to post a quick summary on here

i'll be following you in there soonish Jim. I'm at 83k! Its interesting that the service manager should recommend such a short interval so opposed to that stated by the manufacturer. As suggested by Tintin, at that cost (just over a the cost of a tankful of petrol!) it should be regarded as the car's xmas present.

IIRC, Audi don't recommend an interval at all: they say that the 'box is "sealed for life"

I suspect it depends on annual mileage. If you do 5-10k a year I'd be tempted to get it done every couple of years, at least.

Mine will get done again service after next as I only do 5k a year

BTW, I also asked about a recon 'box price. They supply a fully reconditioned and guaranteed 'box for just under £2K (plus fitting if you need it)

What warranty do they give on a re-conned box?

web site says

•Industry-leading warranty coverage up to a 3 year parts and labour

guess that means its mileage related

I spoke to John @ Mackies today on this, as part of my deliberations on what to do with my 'box. He confirmed that the box would be fully reconditioned (all parts), with a 3 year 100k mileage guarantee. TBH, that might be enough to sway me to go with Mackies (if they're as good as they seem to be) - the price (£2490+VAT) is a bit more than Chester, but the warranty is outstanding, better even than a "new" (whatever that means) box from Audi.

However - should if I choose to go with them, I still need to decide how to get the car there - my RAC Home/Recovery/Onward Travel cover (if I read it right) would only cover taking it more than 10 miles if it has broken down, as the "Home" cover element only covers up to 10 miles, and I'm not sure I'm keen to drive it until it breaks , so it might be the low loader option. Ho hum...

I am sure they have recovery trucks at Mackies (at my age it may the memory lying to me however), but maybe worth asking, they might do a decent price if your getting your box from them?
