Default 20" wheels offset question

What would be a correct offset for 20" wheels?
Thought a8 takes everything between 35 and 45
I just got a nice set of 20's and they don't fit
Front is 8.5J ET42 with 255/35 tyre (they don't clear calipers)
Rear is 10J ET45 with 295/30 tyre (they don't clear caliper literally by a hair)

OK, deep breath lol

The standard 20" wheel fitment for a D3 is a 9Jx20 ET46. From memory with a 275/35R20 tyre

Looking at the wheels you've mentioned:

the fronts should give 10mm additional clearance on the inside, but be more inset at the outside due to the narrower wheel (compared to a factory 20) so spacers should sort that. Rolling radius is 2% out from stock

The rears will be 12mm closer on the inside and stick out 14mm less on the outside. Again spacers can sort.

Have a look here:

http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php...et2=45#content

and try substituting the spec of your existing wheels rather than the factory 20s to give a better idea of where you might be able to get them out to.

check the tyre rolling radius too - I think you're OK but with quattro it's very important to be very close to the same rolling radius front to back.

Hmmmmm. The differences are not massive, it depends which direction the calipers are fouling.
If it's sideways in/out then as Adrian has said, spacers would resolve that, especially for the fronts which are narrower so tighter.
(Remember ET is in mm, so we're talking small differences here.)

I'd be worrying that it's the shape of the dish of the wheels that is the problem and that's potentially not fixable if it's curving in on the caliper without using excessive spacers. The 10J's shouldn't be anywhere near the calipers if they really are ET45.

1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I'm sure design of the wheel is the issue
Bentley wheels I have now on - the lid curves around calipers, new set is dead flat. Will see with some reasonable size spacers and front is a bigger issue.Rears I would get away with 2mm spacer
See the pic

They look nice Borys!

Make sure the front and rear rolling radius is within 1% or close or you will get the quattro system throwing up ESP errors as it thinks a wheel is slipping. make sure you've worked out the tyre sizes to do this. it sounds like with spacers you should be able to resolve the other issue just make sure that they are all hubcentric ones

Thanx mate,
As reference I used 19" set up with 255/40 tyres
Tyres on those are exact match is radius front and back 686mm
Should be good, Tuesday will play with spacers
Cannot wait
