Might be a much shorter list if he made an inventory of the new stuff he hasn’t fitted to it!

Gearbox ratios are a bit of letdown on S8, it's not really a track car with the size and weight and auto box so no need for such short 5th gear.

Same with B6 S4 very short 6th gear but why? Its limited to 155mph and can do 153mph in 5th before hitting rev limiter so what's the point, it's not like 6th gear will offer any performance benefits, it's only there for cruising so why not make it so that car has 2000 rpm @70mph instead of 3000rpm? At least they changed it on later S cars with them being 1800-2000rpm @70mph. If I was going to keep S4 long time I would probably swap in 6th gear from TDI .

Anyway rant over and pdfs attached with some D2 gearbox ratios

Thanks for this Ainars,

Do I understand correctly from these PDFs that
5th gear on 3.7 is longer than on standard non-S8 4.2,
delivering lower rpm on same motorway road speed?

Cheers.

Hopefully not digressing too far, but I think the S8 gear ratios are designed to get an "unrestricted" S8 to the highest top speed it can possibly achieve, somewhere around 175mph.
i.e. max power at highest revs just overcomes air/rolling etc. resistance.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Smaller ratio number means longer gear but you need to take into account also intermediate and final drive ratios. It's a bit hard to tell, probably best to put all the data in excel spreadsheet to multiply all different ratios and to show the total for each box and gear.

Could a 3.7 box be mated with a 4.2 engine? best of both worlds.
I completely agree about the 5th gear ratio in the S8, its one thing I really found annoying on my previous S8, at 70mph almost 3000rpm.
Makes no sense for top speed either, all the modding guys in the audu srs and rs246 forums are swapping in low ratio gears for higher top speed.

You can't swap autos between engines because the ECU and TCU know which one of each they should be talking to. Plus the 3.7 has a 5hp19 and the 4.2 has a 5hp24.

My solution would be to manual swap an S8 with a TDI gearbox. You get the same 1-5 as the auto, plus a super-high cruising gear. This is the result:

Oh that's a shame about the auto boxes.
I'm with you all the way about the manual swap
but I understand people who want to keep the auto box, its very smooth and nice for relaxed driving. I still miss it a bit sometimes.

All well and good but 730 miles at 16mph would be a painful 45 hours in an S8
