Also, had a reply from Sacer to say that they don't have anything listed at present but can check the market to see if they can source something.

They were wondering how many people might be interested?

Yes I forgot to mention this sorry. The D2 is similar as it has two pips on the flexi fitting to hold it in to the bracket. On the front, if the flexi is stuck in the bracket I unbolt it and spin the bracket and flexi together. On the rear (welded bracket) I support it from underneath with the transmission jack and percussively free the flexi from the bracket and then spin it round.

Re LCDs, I'd be in for a couple of sets if the price is sensible - either the odo or the centre display, or both.

I found these people a while back, but haven't made contact so don't know if they can do the FL DIS. https://cartronix.co.uk/product/audi...7-speedometer/

Same here. I'd take at least one set if Sacer can source them for a reasonable price. My LCDs are currently working perfectly, but I guess it's only a matter of time ...

I mailed Cartronix and Pixelfix as well. Pixelfix said no, So far Cartronix say nothing.....

If Sacer come up blank I might try getting a cheap A4 B6 cluster and looking inside that.....

Two bits of news..... neither positive.

Sacer came back to say that they can't find anything so far. There was an implication that he hasn't given up yet, but I'm not holding my breath.

So I got hold of an A4 B6 cluster and took it to bits. The displays are connected in an entirely different way, connective rubber strips on both sides, held in contact by pressure from the cage surround, whereas A8 FL has a soldered ribbon cable on one side....

Bah!

The quest continues - and may involve actual A8 bits. This is a major PITA! I can live without the time/date, but illegible ODO/trip is a significant irritant.

On a more positive note, I've managed to get hold of another cluster at a very reasonable price.

I've plugged it into the car and the displays all look good. Only a short test in coolish weather it's true, but they are waaay better than mine.

Obviously the immobiliser light came on so I didn't bother trying to start it. It does still run with the original put back though.

The new one is from a 3.7 and has P/No.4D0 919 035AQ. The original is the same apart from AA suffix.

I suppose the two options are:

1. to get the new one programmed to work with my car. I'm not sure whether the V8 origins pose a problem for tacho calibration and I'm not sure whether the mileage can be altered to match mine. The latter is not a show stopped as there's only about 5k difference and I can live with that.
I did contact one of the local specialists, but he didn't appear to have done one before (and I don't want to be the one who pays for his learning) and was mostly bothered whether I could prove (to his unspecified satisfaction) that both my car and the donor were not stolen as apparently he has to go onto the VAG system to do this and if either were flagged stolen he'd get banned. I've abandoned that idea. I sort of understood form another post on here that if I can get the cluster pin numbers (using Super Vag?) then I could potentially do the job myself if I had access to the full VCDS?

2. Break out the soldering iron and swap the displays...... fiddly and not risk free but perhaps simpler? Some pics below.

Any thoughts?

Nick

I just did A6 middle big DIS replacement couple of days ago. Putting a new one in is a piece of cake, removing the old one is a bit more tricky without damaging ribbon cable.

You do not want to put too much heat in it but at the same time you need enough to melt the solder so that you do not need to pull too hard. I definitely pulled to hard and 2 of traces from ribbon were left on PCB but I did not really care about the old one as it was going in the bin anyway. Odometer and time displays on C5 A6 just use rubber strips. I guess if you have the right tools and are careful it should be OK but it might be easier to remove EEPROM from old and transfer to replacement and that would transfer over your mileage and immo/key data.

You will struggle trying to get the pin (skc) code from the cluster. If you read the small print many of the advertised units on ebay that claims to be able to get the code (and there are many) won't do this generation of cluster.

I spent months looking for a diy solution and for every claim on the net of someone successfully using vag com to get the pin from this generation of cluster there are horror stories of others bricking there clusters using the same kit.

High end readers (£1500+) were all I could find that had good reviews. Arbites? or something similar sounding.

I'm not sure how to put a link in this post but if you find my recent post about the centre colour display, there is a company who says they can transfer all the data from one cluster to the other.

Just as a word of caution. On my old (2002) A4 with the same generation of cluster, I tried one of the eBay readers. Not a particularly cheap one (£200) and it broke my cluster. Seller gave me a refund and claimed that the reader wasn't able to decode Immo3. Although on the listing it says it could. I recovered from this but it took me weeks and lots more research.

In terms of the eprom swap option. There are 3 different chips on the cluster pcb that will need to be swapped. The immo and millage information is stored over there different chips. Changing one without the others will not work. Simply reading and then Re-writing the small eprom alone will transfer the millage only, not the immo data.

I have a bench cluster wiring harness that I connect to a 12v power supply. I have numerous spare clusters. I have VCDS. I have an MCUmall chip reader. I have tried transferring data from the small eprom only. I have tried physically swapping the small eprom only. If you do this, only the millage will transfer.

I need to fix my center display and am in a similar situation to yourself. I haven't decided which way to go yet.

Leave well alone and live with it.

Swap all 3 chips again to another cluster.

Send it and the replacement to the company who say they can clone it.

The latter seems to be the obvious one but if you're cluster gets lost in the post you will be in real trouble.
