Default Glove box illumination

Anyone know if there is a light in the d2 glovebox?

Every other orifice in the car is bathed in a red glow

Yes, there is, but it's very awkward to get at and prone to breaking. I've had to replace a couple, courtesy of our sponsors.

Awkward isn't stating it well enough, it's an absolute swine to replace the bulb and you WILL break the mounting as its design is terrible.

The only sensible approach is to take the whole glovebox out, which oddly isn't particularly difficult at all!

I've got a nice bright white LED in mine now.

(Fair while since I did it, but IIRC it's only a couple of screws. And you leave the Bowden cable that opens it connected; no need to disconnect that as there's more than enough movement to get at the bulb)

I've just replaced all my bulbs with LED's and found the glove box one to be VERY fiddly (I didn't think that the removal of the glovebox would be that easy or beneficial so I did it all by feel).
My holder was already broken and just dangling there, so I got a replacement from A8parts on my recent visit.
The replacement looked fine and I was told by Maria to be careful with it as they only get about 1 in 10 that are good enough for resale.
I was extremely careful taking mine out of the packet but the slightest touch on one of the lugs caused it to break. Well miffed
I tried supergluing the lug back on with superglue but it was futile so I tested it with just one rear lug in place and it seems to work. It doesn't fall out of the holder - yet. If it does then I'm sure my skills with a Dremel will be able to fettle a little repair from something else.
So the moral is, as already mentioned by Andrew...............
Be EXTREMELY careful removing the holder and replacing it. After 15 or so years, the plastic used in the holder just gives up the ghost.

I honestly can't recall what I did about the holder itself, mine was definitely broken at some stage and I don't recall buying a replacement.
Pretty sure I fixed it somehow, and I do vaguely recall rerouting some of the wiring and fixing it in place to make things easier in future.

BUT I can 100% guarantee that next time I WILL take the glovebox out. If I can remember how to do it.

Yes, I took the glove box out. It's much easier to do that than try to fit it in situ.

Default Let there be light

Agree with the comments above - it is a royal pain to do.
3 bolts took the glovebox out - turned out to be a broken wire.
Looks like the hamfisted previous motor mechanic has been at work inside the car too!

Decided to fit a led unit (ring lamps 'puddle light') instead of the fragile OE holder. Soldered on to existing wiring and it works a treat

See the pic -will try and get one of the finished article when it's not so cold

Superglue is useless for stuff like that. You could try Bondic ... amazing stuff:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bondic-Purp.../dp/B00QU5M4MG

Strictly speaking it's not a glue, more of a liquid plastic, so ideally you need to put it around the joint (if practical) for greater adhesion surface area and strength. Then you wave the UV LED at it for about 3-5 seconds and it sets rock hard. I've used it for repairing all sorts of things, including customer's broken network wall sockets that would usually break again very quickly using superglue.

That's very good to know. I didn't know such stuff existed. Thanks
