Ahah!
Just looked again and in fact the top surface is a separate (presumably metal) sheet that has the edges rolled over to fix it to the plastic body below. Still all the same colour though.

Here's my drivers one; the structure I think is EXACTLY the same as the fake wood ones, with a metal sheet as the top surface, just painted plain colour rather than the wood effect.

And probably the whole thing sprayed after assembly judged from the way the paint is underneath.
Do you want me to find the others (this was just handy) or are you going the 2-part route?

By the way, I found a (poor) picture I'd posted here some years ago of my PF S8 which confirms that had (as I thought) one-piece panels.

Hi Andrew,

I now see after looking at your picture that the plastic past still consist of two panels that are impossible to separate for painting.

I will have to explore options of fitting pre-facelift kit (eBay link on 1st post).
Although it'll consist of two parts it is paintable due to absence of inseparatable top design.

Many thanks for posting the picture !!

I'm confused, apart from the fact that they have a front/rear split the two versions appear the same for painting.

What are you trying to achieve when painting, they would all seem to be equally easy/difficult. Do you want different colours in different places?

Only a teeny, weeny bit off topic.....
But how the **** do you get the lower piece of trim back in to mate up to the top piece???
I'm swapping a few cosmetic bits between cars yesterday and today (so may have unrelated questions later) but am struggling to get the bottom piece back in.
It's a bugger to get out but even worse to get back in.

This is what I am referring to:

Audipages comment:
"It's difficult to get this piece inserted back in correctly, you might need to tap it with a rubber mallet and either use a rag or you'll have a big scuff mark."
Which I think is a bit of an understatement. And I am using a rubber mallet too. But the bugger just won't go back it and I don't want to smash or scuff it.

Has anyone else had a problem or has yours just slipped straight in?
And does anyone have any tips or advice before I starting beating one of my D2's - John Cleese style?

I want to achieve re-paintable solution, which means all parts can be disassembled to basic components made of one material. It is impossible to achieve this with facelift design.

If you look at first e-bay link closely each component is just a simple plastic part. There are no seams involved with change of material. For example, 4 'cups' for your hand are not made of two separate materials. They are just one piece of plastic. Same with from part where the switches are. Just a. plain simple piece of plastic. No top and bottom involved.

This thing looks more basic, but it is paintable, so it will last forever if repainted from time to time. Makes sense?

You need to look at the lugs on the bottom piece and see how they fit to the top piece.
It's been a while, but IIRC there are two tricks to this:
1. Removal. One end is easier to prise out than the other to get started, the clips are subtly different. This bit I found tricky.
2. Refit. You have to engage to big lugs into the top section first, so it an EDGE that connects first not an END as your picture shows. I never had any problems.
(I think it's the edge you have to feed in and up that need to engage in the plastic slots, then you have to prise the edge on the inside of the car to engage with the trim - carefully to avoid visible damage)

OK. Understand.
I'm not sure the eBay link fits that description though, if you look carefully you can see a line on at least one component so I suspect it may have the same structure and have been filled where it's smooth. But ask our sponsors to clarify.

And the paint seems to have adhered quite happily on mine to the two different materials.

And you could always take that top metal layer off first.

Since you said that you didn't have any problems, I thought that I must be doing something wrong. And indeed I was!

On the top piece, there are two screw holes/plastic lugs. These plastic lugs/lug must go IN FRONT of the door screw holes:

If, like me, you put the plastic lugs of the top piece BEHIND the door screw holes (very easily done), this is what you get:

You get this ugly gap that will not go away no matter how much you hit it with your mallet.

So your key words Andrew were "I never had any problems".
Once I thought that I was doing something wrong, everything else just clicked into place - really easily.

Thanks
