Default AMI and Apple Lightning Adapter

Just got an iPhone 6 and began looking into how I can connect it with the AMI. I see Audi now do a genuine cable, but I'm not looking to spend that amount.

I believe the 30 pin - Lightning Adapter will work, but again the genuine Apple one is pretty dear. I'm going to need 2, 1 for the wifes Tiguan too.

Is anyone using an iPhone 5/6 in their A8 and what bits did you use? Does anyone have any experience of using a non genuine adapter? A couple of reports on Google said they don't work, but I'd be keen to hear first hand.

The non genuine ones will charge your phone but will not give you AMI functionality so it depends on what you are looking for - if you just want to charge your phone and use Bluetooth etc to connect then that may be ok for you otherwise you would need the proper version to make everything else work and listen to music/ use the menus to select it etc.

I'm looking it to charge and control the iPhone.

So genuine is the only way then? And the genuine adapter will work? I don't need to get the Audi AMI cable?

I don't know if The genuine adapter will work, but I suspect not, I would go for the genuine AMI cable or if you already have the USB AMI then plug your standard Apple usb to lightening adapter into the USB adapter and see if that works.
*edit - I can try this for you my end as I have both those bits and report back*

The USB to lightning adaptor would just make it appear as storage. If you have the USB adapter, I'd just get a USB stick and pop the tunes on there, much less hassle than having to reach over to the glove box to plug the phone in all the time.

If you have the AMI to 30 pin Apple lead, the GENUINE Apple adaptor for 30 pin to Lightning (get the one with a fly lead NOT the block one) will give full control via MMI

Thanks. I tried it yesterday evening and it doesn't work sadly- would've been too easy!
